I have six Aeotec Range Extender 7 devices that were running older 1.03 version firmware. Some of them were serving as active repeaters, others were not. The current 1.05 firmware includes an update to the most recent SDK, so I decided I would update them. I used the firmware updater software available for my C7 hub. However, I also got a Zooz Z-wave 700 stick to remove ghosts left behind during the process. It proved most useful. The updated devices were excluded and then reincluded without security. However, none of my range extenders are currently being used actively as repeaters for the mesh. I do have other Z-wave mains powered devices that are acting as repeaters. I guess the devices requiring repeaters latched on to the other devices when I excluded the repeaters from the mesh during the update process.
I have read that there is no need to use security when including repeaters as they just pass through signals, but I am beginning to wonder if including them as S2 might be helpful. I plan to wait a few days without making any other changes to the mesh to see how it settles out.
The interesting thing is
So I guess we'll never find out what the interesting thing is... I am disappoin

So how do you know what version of firmware is on a repeater? I've searched everywhere.
If you are using my driver, look the Data section in Device Details.

That is the trouble with getting old; sometimes you lose your train of thought. It seems to happen more frequently these days.
I have no idea now what I was trying to say. LOL, You will just have to remain disappointed.

FWIW, I don't use S2 on my RE7s. The only thing I use S2 on is my Zen17 used for GDO control, but I just started using S2 with that as part of its latest f/w release...
That particular Zen17 f/w update was a real bear -- I dunno why that one was so painful, but it was rough! If the next Z17 update starts off that bad again, I'll likely ditch S2 on it -- I have a feeling S2 was a factor in all that pain, but no evidence.
Anyway... Be patient with the RE7s -- they may not kick in as active repeaters right away, and maybe not even for a long while... Z-wave routing is a mystery to say the least, and it's not an animal that responds well to prodding & coercing. If anything, such efforts just seem to anger it lol. My RE7s went "unused" for a long time, and then they all just kicked in one day -- they're now working well as the backbone of my ZW mesh.
