When is a topic unread vs new?
Unread = topic you have set to 'tracking' or 'watching' with new posts.
New = new topic that you have not seen.

Discourse will also set threads you’ve read or created to tracking or watching for you based on certain criteria, which is configurable if you don’t like what it does automatically.

Note, you do not need to SET anything to have them tracking. If you read part of the thread it will default you to that.
