I am replacing my surge protector and need to unplug my hub. Do I need to do anything before unplugging it or can I simply switch power strips with no ill effects?

Go into settings and click Shutdown, and then wait for the light to go to red on the hub…

There is a chance that you might cut the power at the moment when data is written in internal database, which can have the effect of locking the table (aka corrupted database). Best thing to do is to shut down from Settings and when the LED turns red to unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Note "unplug from wall". The USB connector can become loose with too much use.

This is good advice from @Inge_Jones. There have been instances of the hub's microUSB connector breaking - so it is desirable to leave it alone.
