Underground fiber optic cable installation cost

Direct burial cat6 shielded cable would work perfectly in this situation.

@user2164 You could easily rent a walk behind trencher (goes down 18") and do it yourself. Since you're in texas it shouldn't be a problem. run electric from the house along with the fiber lines yourself (blow a pull wire through the pipe). PVC pipe is cheap and works well for your application. The machine will probably run you a couple of hundred a day. Once all the wire and fiber is pulled, hire a professional to terminate it.

328 feet
Per Ethernet standards, the maximum length of a Cat5e and Cat6
cable run is 100 meters (or 328 feet).
It is possible to go further by using a POE repeater.

As @WarlockWeary at the distance OP mentioned (1500 ft) that's not feasible. Would have to be fiber (then run converter at the ends).

@user2164 Rough break down of costs

2" Schedule 40 pipe for 1500 feet. About $3500
1000 Ft roll of single mode fiber about $300 per roll
14/2 roll NM/B (outdoor rated) $350 per 1000 feet.
Trencher Rental. About $200
fiber>ethernet converters with POE about $65 each.
Beer for friends to give a hand, $60 a case for good stuff, 20 bux for budweiser.

Again, that's a rough breakdown.

Same with a blue top battery and solar

@rlithgow1 90 deg F temp here plus humidity making it feel like 100 deg, makes me doing the trenching not a good idea at my age.

So... just met with the local fiber optic company that originally gave the name of the $41K guy because the local company doesn't like to do "conduit work". He agreed the estimate I got was very high, even after I take directional boring out of the job and provide an open trench for the fiber optic cable.

He agreed to do all the "above ground" work (put the FDU's in each enclosure and terminate all the strands) if I can get the cable pulled and the enclosures set up, but waiting on an estimate for that work. Now hoping the electrician is willing to do that extra work, i.e., running the extra conduit for the fiber and pulling the fiber. He was already planning on setting up the enclosures.

...To be continued...

what about coax with a moca on each side.. is use it for upstairs to downstiars and 3 locations it is 2.5gb

14/2 won't suffice. I would like to have up to 5 amps 120VAC at the far end for other stuff. A couple of IP cameras, gate intercom/video, trickle charger for gate opener, LED flood light(s), etc. There will be other devices (cameras, floods, etc.) at the intermediate points.

14/2 across 1500' trying to carry 5 amps 120VAC will have a voltage drop of almost 40 volts at the far end. My guess is it will take either 8 awg or 6 awg, but it's up to the electrician to figure that out. When I first talked to him, he suggested 8/3 + ground direct burial tray cable or UF to get two legs of 120VAC. Cost is a little less than $3/ft. I have assumed this would be my biggest materials cost.

Ethernet extenders might be an alternative (up to 3KM), but there's a performance loss, and they are expensive (but not when compared to the original $41K job cost).

Seems to me he intentionally priced it high because he really doesn't want to do it, hoping it would discourage you from following up. I know I would.

MoCA has the same 300 ft length limitation as ethernet cable.

I think that's probably true. The local guy (who gave me the name of the $41K guy) said the same thing when I told him how much it was. I think he was only willing to do it if he made a bundle on the job.

I terminate/test fibers on a monthly basis, also an electrician. That price is definitely on the higher side. It's possible that person has none of the equipments and needed to rent them as well.
Get a couple more quotes or get one for trenching and another for termination.
Please go with fiber with that distance. None of this nonsense POE repeater/extender. They are nothing but problem in the long run. The amount of strands needed for fiber multiple by 3 if it's less than 3. The cost is minimal.
