Unable to add any Matter device

Hi people,

I'm at a total standstill. I just installed my C-8 and am trying to add a matter device, but it won't pair. The only device I can see is my mobile phone, which is not assigned to a room. I am also not able to add Hubitat to Google home, it says: no compatible devices were found.

The matter device I wanted to add is a Tapo smart dimmer, but I cannot find Tapo in the application list. I tried Kasa instead, but also no dice. So I installed the Tapo app on my phone, hoping that would bridge something. I don't know, perhaps a brain fart but: hey, I am stuck, so you try something, right?

Thanks for reading :slightly_smiling_face:

Welcome to the Hubitat community.

Matter works sorta different compared to protocols like Zigbee and Z-wave, where you are pairing directly from device to a radio within the hub.

With Matter, and specifically Hubitat Matter (at least as of Jan 2025) you have to join "commission" the device to your Wifi network via a commissioning device. There are a few ways to do so, but Alexa and Google Home are popular ways to commission a device.

Once the device has been commissioned, you can share that device to Hubitat.

There are details on this page, near the top there are sections that you can expand open to see more details. Add Device | Hubitat Documentation

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your welcoming words🙂

I've been reading the links you provided but I'm still not getting it, Ăłr something is wrong with the commissioning. Perhaps you can help me with the following scenario.

I have a Tapo P135 Smart Wi-Fi Lamp Dimmer. This has a QR code, and also an 11 digit number printed on it. I want to get this operational, and operate it through the Google Home app. What steps do I take?

So far I have:

  1. Installed the Tapo app on my phone and connected the device to this app.
  2. Added the Kasa app to the Hubitat UI
  3. Set up rooms in Hubitat
  4. Attempted several times to add Hubitat as a Device that works with Google into the Google Home app
  5. Attempted to add the Tapo device directly to Hubitat by entering the 11 digits, but pairing doesn't happen.

Should I add the Tapo app to the Google Home environment? That doesn't seem logical to me for several reasons.

Anyway, I realize I'm asking A LOT. I appreciate all the input :hugs:

Thanks for reading!

Yes.

Currently for matter devices you pair to Alexa/Google/Apple and then share it from there to Hubitat.

How to use Matter on Hubitat Elevation | Hubitat Documentation.

Adding Matter Devices to Hubitat

For any Matter device, the device must first be commissioned with another Matter controller (Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or similar). This controller can then put the device in "pairing mode" to use with another system, such as Hubitat.

To expand on what was said. Matter devices are not tied to a single hub like Z-devices are.

So you can actually "pair" it to multiple hubs at once. The nice thing with that is the device will directly communicate to all hubs with status updates at the same time. So you do not have to add it to Hubitat and then share it to Google, you just add it to both hubs. Since Hubitat is not (yet?) capable of the initial "commissioning" you would add it to Google first then create a pairing code to add it to Hubitat (should be explained in the linked docs).

So you may ask why do I need Hubitat then for Matter devices? Well by adding it Hubitat you can use its powerful local rules and apps to add automations to your devices.

Also for TAPO device I think you could integrate them via the TAPO protocol using this custom integration: [RELEASE] TP-LINK TAPO Plug, Switch, Bulb, Hub and Robovac Integration , which I assume talks to the devices in a similar way the TAPO app does when on your local LAN. Personally, I would just go the Matter route, once you figure that out it is pretty easy and built right into HE without adding custom code. Adding any new Matter device will then follow the same steps.

Thank you. It's slowly becoming clearer. I will give that Tapo integration a shot.

I still don't understand why I cannot commission Google Home, every time I try it tells me there are no compatible devices.

I think you're saying I would need another hub. I thought the entire idea of Matter was to use one hub to replace all others.

I have Phillips Hue. But I've read a few negative reviews about applying that as a Matter hub.

You do, but don’t you already have one? Do you have any google home devices? You would commission the device first via the google home app on your phone. Then once that is done you can get a separate pairing code from google home which lets you add the device to other hubs like Hubitat.

As a last resort you could use that Tapo integration as well. Personally I think matter would be less complicated once you get the hang of it.

I think you are trying to connect GH to Hubitat? That is for sharing devices already in Hubitat to GH, it only goes one way. If you don’t have any devices on Hubitat yet that’s why it won’t work.

You could add a virtual switch device to Hubitat and get it going that way if you want but it won’t help solve the problem with the device.

Google home isn't a matter bridge. Simply use the built in google integration to connect to Hubitat. That said, the integration is one way. So you can share devices from hubitat to google but not google to hubitat (this does not include matter devices)

So a general recap for matter devices

Commission/onboard matter devices to the fabric using Google or Alexa or Apple homekit. (note these are all hardware devices such as speakers not JUST an app)

Once commissioned you generate a code from google/alexa/apple and then run add matter device on the hubitat side and add that code.

The reason for the moment that hubitat cannot commission matter devices is that the apps don't have access to bluetooth which is needed for commissioning

Note: Matter thread devices need a thread border router such as an apple homepod.
