But because I hadn't remove the device it still controlled the value.
Doesn't look like it, how you have surmised is correct. Nothing get scheduled or subscribe to until you hit done. There for if you add extra devices your need to go in and save again to create the link.
My issue with a clients setup was that devices were not getting un subscribed to when removed and done hit.
This bug will be fixed in the next release.
