I’ve checked the forum and the documentation and am not finding info on this.
A relative who has a Hubitat at my recommendation is selling their house and needs to transfer the Hubitat as well as their Hub Protect Subscription to the new owner.
I’m fairly certain this thread is still accurate for adding an admin (new owner) to the hub:
HOWEVER, how does the Hub Protect subscription get transferred to be associated with the new email??
I’ll recommed they remove their credit card from the hub protect renewal first. After that, how does the subscription go to the new admin?
I can find how to transfer the subscription to a new hub, but that is not what is happening here - they are required by the sale agreement to give the new owner the hub and all it’s automations (which are only associated with permanently installed lights).
I’m not sure that a Hub Protect subscription is intended to be transferable from one person to another but I agree with @Slate that the subscription support web form would be the way to find out.
Unfortunately, replacing the email address of an active subscription is not possible. The email address is required for our payment processing service, and it has ongoing schedules attached to it that effectively make the email address irreplaceable.
The only thing you can do, is to cancel the current service, then replace the admin account with new email, and then resubscribe for the (same) service from the new accout.
When the current subscription expires. If you cancel a service before it expires, the service on the hub remains active until it expires, regardless of subscriber. When the service expires, to continue, one must resubscribe from the new account. This applies to Hub Protect and Cloud Backup. The Remote Admin service is tied to the account, so attempting to use the service after the admin account was replaced, will not work.
Not really something I am interested in… but hey… it’s a Friday night… just…
Does that mean the subscription would still be linked to @calinatl’s relative, rather than the new owners of the property / hub, while the existing subscription is active? Thinking about who would need to make a claim in the future (x months).
Again, not my concern… EDIT - That does sound a bit…. confrontational… Just trying to re-iterate a point, not force-feed my opinion….
I was just thinking about how a change of ownership could pose some complications…. i.e. I sell my hub to someone else and they need to make a claim… not that I have protection…
The hub id is associated with a particular registration email (which changes with ownership). So there’s no issue with the new owner contacting Hubitat for a warranty issue.
There’s also no issue with getting a new subscription associated with that email when needed.
There are no "complications". The subscriptions are non-transferable and cannot be resold, like a hub. If Hubitat support doesn't (always) enforce the terms of service, is mainly because we care about our users and their pockets.
By not transferable, do you mean not transferable to another hub, or not transferable to another email?
So when my relative makes a new email the admin on the hub, will the remaining duration of the subscription transfer to the new owner of the house - ie will the hub backup?
My relative is going to create a temporary email for all devices and transfer to that, and let the new owners then do another transfer to the email they want to use. So there will be two transfers. Will that have an impact?
The subscription is not transferable to a different account (email). However, you can move active services between hubs that are registered under the same account by visiting my.hubitat.com.
If the admin account of the hub changes, the existing subscription will remain active until its expiration date. During that time, we can verify that the hub has active coverage and have, in certain situations, made exceptions to honor the extended warranty. However, we cannot transfer the subscription itself to the new account owner.
To ensure uninterrupted service after the current subscription expires, the new account owner must subscribe to the same service before the expiration date.
Thanks to all who replied, especially @bobbyD for replying over the weekend. Much appreciated. It would be great if the info shared on this thread were available in the online documentaion.
Another idea would be an online documenation guide for how to transfer admin rights to the Hubitat when you sell a house and the Hubitat, along with it’s automations, is staying with the house…
