Tracking HomeKit codes, smart start, etc

Just wondering what you guys do? As my devices increase so have the various things to potentially keep track of.

Haven’t needed any of those things past their “first use”, but worry about a time I’ll have to reset or go back to add a device and wonder where the code is or which is which!

Do you keep a physical binder? Digital spreadsheet? Something else?

A flat text file with the code (and a the model of the device and where I'm using it) for me.

This has worked well, even if it's probably the least elegant solution out there, but I suspect it won't scale as I keep getting more and more devices. I don't expect to truly need this for most devices, as usually the codes are also on the devices themselves, so I'm mostly thinking of times if the code becomes unreadable for some reason (heat or UV exposure?) or is maybe in a hard-to-reach spot where I somehow still wouldn't need physical access to pair/reset.

I know there are apps like HomePass for HomeKit codes, but I'm not aware of anything more general for things like Z-Wave DSKs, Matter paring codes (though I'd be surprised if these apps weren't expanded to support this kind of thing now that HomeKit can commission Matter devices--just haven't checked recently), and others that people who don't only use HomeKit might also have.

Hopefully others have some ideas; otherwise, I'm not overthinking it for the moment.

Makes me think I should go and start doing this for anything matter or homekit related...

The iOS app "HomePass" is invaluable! Tracks Homekit/Matter codes with iCloud backup and PDF export.

Nice. I should mention that when I just went looking for it, there's an app named "Homepass" and it's not what you're describing. The actual name is "Homepass for HomeKit".

At one time (before I got into home kit) started a spread sheet with the device information for each device (mostly zwave), around the same time I was also taking a picture of the SmartStart QR code and kept those in a folder in my one drive. I really need to get back to cleaning that up. I did download a couple apps that were suggested, but those seem to be aimed at HomeKit only, and I don't see a way to include things like smartstart codes in them.

While that app looks really clean, I wouldn't change my simple iOS note. Really, it's not that hard to just add a photo of the HomeKit or SmartStart code to notes, and it's backed up to iCloud by default and easily exported to PDF.

I cut the QR codes out of the boxes and wrote what device they were for, have them in a bag.
Would like to get a photo of them all and then just name the file of what device it is as well.

I downloaded the app (2 actually) but i havent do e much woth them. Seems they are not so much intended for Zwave, which i most of what I have. I need to just go back tothe spread sheet and update it.

I tried that too. I lost most of them hahaha. But i still have the pictures.
