Hubitat doesn't have a Thread radio. So if it is to happen, it would require new hardware.
To be specific, there aren't any plans to add thread.
Actually I believe thread is designed to work with existing ZigBee radios or WiFi ones? I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere that the Idea is a firmware update is all that is needed to get thread working. Whether that's the case on a on the HE radio I'm not sure. I'll see if I can find the article it was a few years ago though.
Not all zigbee radios.
Ok, like said it was a few years ago when I read it so wasn't sure what I remember.
I came to ask the same thing.
The group that developed Thread includes basically all the major device makers and it uses the same hardware as Zigbee, so it would be stupid to not have plans to add Thread support.
The next Hubitat device version needs to support BT LE and Thread or it will be DOA when SmartThings v4 hits with both. They at least need integration with a major gateway like Nest Guard, so hopefully Google stops dragging their feet on their API replacement.
Um... Hi welcome to the community..
Interesting first post..
I'm sure Hubitat will support the emerging technologies when the time is appropriate and when they are mature enough.. As of right now BT LE is a mess and Thread is ip based so integration should be easy when / if the devices come.
Yup. It should be noted that the history of 6LoWPAN in the home automation sector has been dismal.
In light of developments over the last year, is thread support still not in the plans? or can we expect some support?
Probably too open ended of a question for them to answer clearly.
Are there specific devices, available today, that you are looking for thread support on?
correct, still not in the plans, its a hardware change, and so far there just hasn't been the demand...
I'm not looking for support, but Thread devices are finally coming, within the Apple HomeKit ecosystem first.
That’ll be any day now I’m sure .
Notes Platforms | OpenThread that is supposed to run on any platform.
Thread in the wild, using 2.4 GHz radios as primary carrier, BLE as backup. These are all HomeKit devices.
A fair amount of technical description:
I've been following Thread and it has a lot of good ideas. I'm just concerned about the perimeter security model. Other than that I do like that it builds on the IP separate of application from transport. I still want to understand if the security model will make it difficult to integrate other devices.
Thread does seem to be getting decent traction, would be good to see this come to Hubitat, otherwise we’re going to find more and more devices that we can’t talk to inside the HomeKit walled garden.
Doesn’t Thread require a special chipset , or is a ZigBee design adaptable ?
Some of the newer ones are. I don’t think the one Hubitat uses is.
