Sylvania vs Hue

This one surprised me.

I have nine down lights in the soffit on the front of my house. Long ago (10/2016) I put in Sylvania 5/6" recessed retrofit lights. They have worked well since I put them on their own mesh. Even so, once a year or more a couple of them might drop off the mesh. None of my other lights drop off. These are a mix of brands including all flavors of Sylvania/Osram/Ledvance bulbs.

I picked up some Hue BR30 spots to see if they would perform better. I installed one of them last night and was shocked at how much better the Sylvanias are. They were brighter and the colors much more saturated. I alway considered the Hue bulbs to be the best.

Hue: 12.5 watt, 85 watt equiv, 1200 lumens
Sylvania: 13.5 watt, 65 watt equiv, unknown lumens

Obviously the marketing doesn't track there.

I do like the look of the glass lenses I got to cover the openings. Now I have to decide if I want to replace the Sylvanias and go with the inferior bulbs, or pull out the ladder every 18 months to reconnect the better looking bulbs.

Otherwise my lighting has been trouble free for years. I was just shocked at how much better the Sylvanias are.

They are indeed. I was lucky to get mostly the Sylvania/Ledvance downlights which never drop off for me. I thought I had rid myself of the Osram ones, but I still have 2 in use. I do have some GE in wall dimmers spread around that mesh, which seemed to help years ago when I set up the separate mesh for them. The BR 30 sylvanias are also not nearly as good as the retrofit ones. They get too hot, and the colors aren’t nearly as good. Might be the case with Hue as well.

Same, I love my Sylvanias.

I just pull the disconnect on my Inovelli dimmer to bring the errant bulb back. And I think I notice slightly more problems in the summer when the roof is hot(lights mounted to rafters)

I haven't had much luck with a power cycle. In fact, it might be after a power issue when they drop off. Since all nine are on the same circuit I worry that pulling power will reset one and knock another off.

Maybe I don't wait long enough for the mesh to recover. I'll probably end up using the Hue lights in other places. I have one BR30 (Sengled?) starting to fail. I can replace both bulbs with the Hues so the colors match.

One of these days I need to finish migrating some outlets and switches on that side of the house. It never hurts to have a stronger mesh.

Unfortunately I really like the trim kit I tested for use with the BR30s. I would rather have the better color on the front of the house, rather than better trim. :person_shrugging:

i have the opposite.. got rid of all my sylvanias.. they would drop off the mesh and fubar stuff because they were repeating. now use hues for all my bulbs no issues.

All of my bulbs are Hue, but my downlights are Sylvania. The old Sylvania bulbs were garbage

All the flavors (branding) of the Sylvania bulbs an OK repeaters of lighting data. They fell down when repeating other devices. How bad it was depended on the specific environment.

In my case it got worse over time as my mesh grew. My solution was to add a second hub (C5 at the time) and move all the lights to that mesh. They ran for years in that setup.

Now that I'm thinking about it I have a few devices that haven't been migrated to my newest system. I wonder if there are some old devices sitting on the same channel and are no longer connected to a hub? That could be what is causing those infrequent failures. I need to finally finish up that migration.
