I am very new to the home automation world and needing advice on choosing the right equipment and setup for a home renovation we are completing. Lighting is my first crack at this.
My newly renovated area was prepped for canless recessed lighting before I made the decision to automate. My electrician did run neutrals. I am hoping to be able to control the temperature of these lights based on a circadian rhythm schedule but also give my family members the ability to turn on/off and dim lights from a switch.
I was looking at these as a possible option.
They are not listed as compatible on the Lutron site for Caseta dimmers. Would I be able to connect these to regular Caseta switches giving me solid remote and local on and off functionality and then control the dimming and temperature through another type switch or hubitat? Or even though they are not listed as compatible would one of the Caseta dimmers with neutral work?
I am a huge fan of Lutron Caseta and I have a lot of them. They do require a separate PRO-series (not consumer) hub but it's well worth the investment.
Like many things with HE, there are lots of alternative solutions. If these lights work with the generic RGB zigbee bulb driver (and that's an if) you should be able to turn them on and off and control the color all from HE without the need for a physical switch at all. Since the bulb web site says zigbee is an option this might be a valid route. Then you can use any one of a number of button controllers (the picos are great if you're already invested in Lutron) to send an event to HE which can then be used to turn on and off the lights, change colors, etc. So in essence the "light switch" is still there for your family but doesn't actually cut power to the bulbs. It just signals HE and automation takes care of the rest.
Caseta has definitely been the way I wanted to go from the start however I am concerned the dimmer may not work with these lights.
Do you have a recommendation on which switch I should go with? I will have at least 2 groups of lights that are 3-way wired and my husband doesnt have a good feeling about capping off the other end and just having a PICO so he wants a switch installed there. I think from reading my only option here would be the (PD-10NXD) with a mechanical switch on the other end.
I would be fine with on/off/dimming only at the wall but would need an alternative to be able to control temperature. That if possible I would like to set up on an automatic timing schedule. Could this be achieved using something within the hub?
