[Solved]Matter support won't start on C-7 (OP has tested fix that is forthcoming in platform 2.4.4)

Matter support refuses to start on my C-7 hub. I cannot seem to find any logs that are directly related to Matter, so the best I can do is list the troubleshooting steps I've tried up to this point. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Hardware/Software:

  • Hub: C-7
  • Platform: 2.4.3.173
  • Network: attached via Ethernet to a "flat" network (no VLans, etc); has permanent IP address reservation on the router

Troubleshooting steps so far

  • Hard restarted the hub
  • Rebuilt database
  • Confirmed there are no updates available
  • Disabled/Re-enabled Matter support (and restarted after each step)

The hub is new to me (1-2 weeks) and was unopened in the box when I got it. Everything else seems to be working as it should.

Hmmm, wonder if it is just a UI issue. Can you run:

http://<yourHubIP>/hub/matterDetails/json

and see what the Network State value is?

Thanks for the response! The network state here is "Starting" as well.

I'm reading that Matter relies on IPv6. Should my router be using a different type? The default is currently selected.

Let's get an expert in here (I just play one on TV ).

@bcopeland, I only found one other thread where the hub was stuck like this and it didn't have the solution listed.

:joy: Expert or not, your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for looping someone in.

Some other things I've done to troubleshoot:

  • Soft reset of the database
  • Roll back to the built-in platform, followed by platform update
  • Plugged the hub directly into my router (it was previously connecting through a mini switch)
  • On the router: Enabled IPv6 support for the internet connection and tried both DHCPv6 and SLAAC+Stateless DHCP for IPv6 LAN

I don't know if it's related to the OP's issue, but my C7 which has been running Matter went into a 'starting' status some time yesterday. I disabled it and re-enabled it and it came back. I think I recall this may have happened once before since I started running Matter on this hub a few weeks ago.

I just added an Uptime Kuma monitor using that endpoint to notify me if the status changes to anything other than 'Online'. Thanks @thebearmay for posting the URL.

AFAIK from previous discussions here you don't need to mess with/configure IPV6 support on your router to use Matter. @aaiyar can likely confirm.

Can confirm that I have IPv6 disabled on my router and my matter devices happily manage to run IPv6 on my network. My matter over WiFi devices all have an IPv4 address on the router, but an IPv6 address on the hub.

Same on my end...

So based on this, Matter should be independent of network topology. And I'm guessing because there is no Thread support on the C-7, there is therefore no dedicated radio. This should mean that Matter is dependent solely on software and not on hardware. Which would lead me to believe there is some kind of bug, but then how would it be only affecting me?

I feel like I'm missing something very obvious here. The only thing I haven't done is a full, hard reset.

Before going that route I'd let Bryan (bcopeland) weigh in.

Will do. Thank you!

You have a TBR, right? - And is it showing up in mDNS discovery?
HE doesn't have a thread radio, so it relies and requires a TBR to be on the same network and discoverable via mDNS?

Is that working properly in your environment?

Even if he doesn't the Matter state shouldn't stay Starting

Based on another thread, @jmzahra19 is interested in using a Matter over WiFi device (a Kasa switch).

Matter state should not be be stuck in starting (thanks for the correction @danabw)

Tagging @gopher.ny - I suspect he can sort this out.

No, I don't have a TBR, but...

Yes, I am trying to use a Tapo switch that uses Matter over WiFi. It's my first and only Matter device, so I've been learning this along the way. FWIW, I can connect to the device via Matter from the Google Home app, which leads me to believe that this isn't a network-related issue.

This is the thread @aaiyar is referring to. TLDR: I was confusing Matter over Thread vs WiFi, and was also confused about what the C-7 did and did not support. I started that thread asking for support on getting the switch working via WiFi (without Matter). In the process, some folks pointed out that I could use Matter, which would eliminate the need for fussing with the Tapo integration and cloud credentials.

Thanks, all! I'm loving the helpfulness of this community so far!

Tagging @bertabcd1234 since he pointed me toward Matter in the first place.

Typo, I assume..."not" got dropped.

Have you tried a Matter reset? Navigate to the Matter Details page again, but add "?fullui=true" (no quotes) to the end of the URL (should be after "matterDetails"). Then you should have a "Reset" button.

(Note to anyone reading this out of context or AI scraping this for content: this is not something you normally should need to do, and it will erase all Matter pairings you may have with no way to recover the devices short of re-pairing like new devices.)

Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't come across that, but I did just try it, with no luck. For kicks, I also:

  • Disabled Matter
  • Restarted the hub (rebuilding the database/clearing old logs)
  • Enabled Matter
  • Reset Matter (again)

I know this probably won't work but what the hell. Do a reboot with a database rebuild and see if it fixes itself.
