Here is my reasoning for not recommending to use a minimote. If you cannot exclude a device using Z-Wave exclusion from the Z-Wave Details page in the web interface of your Hubitat Elevation hub, chances are, you wouldn't be able to include them either. This rule worked well when I moved my 40+ GE switches and dimmers. Plus, using a minimote to exclude devices from the same controller that you'd like to reinclude, leaves orphaned nodes behind.
@bobbyD, while the HE exclude has worked for me in the past... Can we get better responses from the hub when doing the exclude. Maybe a popup or something. I know we can open the log in another window but for new users this is very confusing with no confirmation popping up that the device was successfully removed.
I haven't used the exclude in a long time (thankfully) so maybe this has already been added but if it hasn't it would definitely help.
Use the minus button to start exclusion
Thanks for your feedback. It's a great idea. You never know what Santa brings
I “thought” I excluded using ST. ST lied to me! Using a mini-mote (Aeotech) made it work every time!
It’s Christmas Eve - now I really have something to look forward to!
That was my experience too. A majority of devices excluded in SmartThings has to be “re-excluded” with a minimote before it would pair with Hubitat. I did not have to air gap any switches with this method.
Here's my reasoning for making the recommendation:
- The problem posed by the OP seemed to be failed Exclusion. Several of us leapt to that conclusion, independently.
- Exclusion wasn't working
- Hub Exclusion doesn't always log both the hub removal AND the USB stick removal. Often you can be sure that the hub completed it's portion, but rarely can you be as certain about the Stick and therefore about the device itself.
- the Minimote and Aeon Z-Stick provide a solid visual clue that the device was excluded, pretty much the opposite of the hub. The hub is hub centric and the Minimote is device centric.
- physical proximity of the Minimote eases the burden of long wires on the hub.
In other words, Independent of why Excludes were failing, the devices needed to be, yet weren't being Excluded. The Minimote is serious firepower in the Exclude biz. Divide and Conquer. Once certain the exclude was completed, debugging the Include would be simplified.
To bring a little closure to my original thread, I've spent the last few weeks trying to get Hubitat to work and for some strange reason, "we" are incompatible. I purchased the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen 5 as recommended by some and still have no luck in getting HE to work. For that matter, HE won't on-board anything from the Z-Stick and fails to find the Z-Stick as a stand-alone device, whether plugged into a separate computer or sitting within 1 meter of the HE Hub. I know the Z-Stick is working correctly as I can see everything in Domoticz. Out of my 70+ devices, I've only been successful at pairing 1 GE Paddle Switch. I've done countless exclusions in both ST, HE and Domoticz and still no luck in getting HE to find my devices. I've done factory resets on my switches time and time again. rebooted the HE, updated firmware and all the standard stuff, plus read a ton of threads and tried countless different ideas. It's almost as if my Hub or zWave antenna is defective or for the EU. Arrrrgh! In the end, I've learned a great deal about the technology and found some other great alternatives. Best of luck to all!
And you contacted support and they weren't able to help you?
Great news arrived over the weekend. It was discovered that my antenna wasn't communicating with my devices correctly. HE sent a replacement antenna and the problem was solved. I am now able to connect both Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. As for the GE Jasco devices, I was able to get 11 switches connected with more coming online as time allows. I had to do multiple Z-Wave exclusions on ST, HE and Z-Stick along with air-gapping each of the switches (countless times) before they would connect. In my experience, the GE's are great switches with wonderful reliability, but a total PITA if you ever want to divorce the mothership. My Zigbee H20 and MP sensors connected with ease, in fact, I was surprised at how fast they connected. Props to HE on that.
HE support was incredibly quick with getting a replacement antenna shipped out; many thanks, and especially to all the with tips from above.
Onward...
Just coming back to this - did a change in the feedback ever get into an update? I was excluding a device and didn't note any real difference - no message to confirm, for example. Is it still planned perhaps?
I have this same question, and my observationis not yet...
No confirmation window when a device is excluded currently, you just get kicked from the individual device details page to the main Device page. That's what I've been using as my confirmation.
I can't get ANY to connect to the Hubitat. I have 117 zwave switches and another brands outlets. They aren't on my ST hub anymore, I have tried popping the tab out, pushing it back in, clicking the top of the paddle 10 times like I'm Dorothy looking to go home and I still can't get anything to pair with the Hubitat. I have an outlet below the switch and I am clicking the switch with Hubitat box, so I can't get any closer. This doesn't seem with the trouble at all.
I have read 100 posts here all about this and still can't find one walkthru.
Have you tried Z-Wave exclude? They must be excluded first to erase their association with the ST hub.
I have tried that with the ST hub and deleted them on the developer page on the internet. I reset the power breaker just now, I still can't get it to pair with Hubitat but it went right back to ST no problem.
Deleting them in the developer page is not the same as exluding the device. You've told ST to get rid of the device, but the device still thinks it's connected to ST.
You need to exclude the device. In ST it's called General Device Exclusion. In Hubitat, it's called Z-Wave Exclude.
Resetting the breaker does absolutely nothing in this situation.
I have ran the device exclusion in ST. Some reason, my upstairs switch found its way to Hubitat. I clicked that switch an HOUR ago, turned the breaker off since, and NOW it discovers it?
Even though I keep all manuals that come with devices, I've found for me it's faster to search on
how to factory reset ....
