[SOLVED] Alexa doesn't see a new device

I'm about to rip my hair out.

Many months ago, I set up several different devices. Installed the Alexa app on Hubitat. Hubitat was able to find all my devices. Alexa was able to find all my devices on Hubitat. Everything is working fine.

Today, I had Hubitat find and control a new GE engrighten smart dimmer plugged into an outlet. Okay. No problem. Only took 15 minutes. Lol. THEN I tried to get Alexa to find and control the device on Hubitat. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Alexa sees all the other devices, but not this new one. When I try to have Alexa find it, it asks what hub I'm using -- but doesn't list Hubitat as an option. Have been randomly trying different ways for 2 hours. No joy. Obviously I succeeded in the past, but can't remember how?

Anyway, the device is a GE enbrighten smart dimmer, plugged into an outlet. HUBITAT SEES AND CONTROLS IT. NOW HOW DO I GET ALEXA TO RECOGNIZE HUBITAT AND FIND THE DIMMER ON HUBITAT??

PLEASE HELP!

Should be just a matter of adding it to the Amazon Echo Skill app in HE. Is that what you are doing? You don't have to do anything on the Alexa app side.

What is "HE"?

Did you “search for devices”? Takes about 20-30 seconds. Device is ready right away.

HE = Hubitat Elevation

Yes, when I "search for devices" Alexa asks me what kind of device?
I have answered "plug", or "switch", or "light".
Then Alesa asks which hub, and lists many hubs, but doesn't list Hubitat?
I have answered 'other'.
Alexa searches for 45 seconds and finds nothing.

Have you done what @terminal3 indicated you need to?

i.e. gone into the Alexa Skill on your Hubitat and added the new device? If you do that, it should automatically be added to Alexa. No discovery needed.

Yes. All devices are listed in the Alexa app, but not the new GE switch. I haven't been able to discover any way to include the new switch in the list.

That is not what @terminal3 asked, or that I asked.

Have you added it to the Alexa Skill ON YOUR HUBITAT?

Go to the "Apps" page on your Hubitat. Open the Alexa Skill, and make sure it is added there.

Yes, All devices are listed on the Alexa skill in the Hubitat. But NOT the new GE device.

Also, I can't find any button to add devices in the Alexa skill app in Hubitat

That's where it needs to be added. If you click on the list of devices, you have the choice of adding more devices.

Ahhhhhhhhh! I kept looking for a button to add devices. Didn't think to click on the list. THAT works. Sigh. Thank you!

Okay, the new device is listed in Hubitat as a device.
It is also listed in the Alexa app on Huitat as a device.
It is NOT listed in Alexa (the app on my phone).

When I have Alexa look to discover it, I'm taken to the same insufferable menu that asks for a hub, but doesn't list Huitat as an option.

Still pulling my hair out!

Please help!

This is not how Hubitat devices are discovered by Hubitat - the only way is by adding them to the Alexa Skill on your Hubitat.

I would give it a minute or two. And if it still doesn't show up in the Alexa app, then do a reboot of your Hubitat.

I think the device is already discovered by Hubitat (it's already listed in Hubitat and in the Alexa app in Hubitat). I'm trying to get Alexa app on my phone to discover the device on Hubitat and/or in the Alexa app in Hubitat. Am I saying that right???

I misspoke. What I meant is "that is not how Hubitat devices are discovered by Alexa".

Can you confirm that after adding the device to the Alexa Skill on Hubitat, you clicked on Done and exited out of the Alexa Skill on Hubitat?

That was it! I didn't hit "done" in the Alexa skill app in Hubitat, after I added the device.

Thank you for your patience. It would have taken me an hour to discover and process these steps without your help. That's probably why I forgot how to do it!

Thanks again!!!

(Now I'll bookmark this for the next time I add something a year from now!)

No worries. Small price for me to pay. I was feeling a little snarky myself! I'm just glad you stayed with it.

43-year-tenured product tester here. It's really not intuitive to tap on a list of blue-text items to add something to the list. We've been trained (as a tech culture) to see blue text as LINKS, not as a modal activator. There ought to be a "plus" icon or "Add" button. Hubitat needs a facelift, there are many ambiguous navigation widgets.
