if you have a recent hp laptop and recently updated your bios you may want the check for a new option they snuck in there and enabled..
it is an underhanded attempt by them to prolong your battery life at the expense of your runtime and save them money from having to replace batteries under warranty..
the laptop still will say its charging to 100% but if you check the battery diagnostics it is really only charging to like 80% of capacity..
so you will get less run time..
the option is under power settings in bios and can be disabled.
Interesting...mine is a few years old (2019), I haven't checked for a BIOS update in a while, probably should.
The change It's not a bad idea to prolong overall battery life (I have my phone set to warn me when it gets to 80%) but they should communicate that change clearly in the release notes, as if you're used to using the battery until it's low, losing 20% of your normal charge will have a noticeable affect.
I just replaced my HP laptop battery (five years old) today, coincidenally. Also plugged in 95% of the time. I try to note when it's around 80% and unplugged, and let it run down to 30%-ish, but I miss catching it a lot, and when I'm not using it, it's plugged in on standby.
thats the problem as you posted.. should give us the option to do that.. not just turn it on and leave you to figure out why your run time is suddenly diminished.
my hp omen 17 i have had for 6 years. only charges to 80%, but the above optimize setting NEVER lets it charge over 80%, and your battery icon still says it charging to 100% but in reality on 80% of available power.
At least with my omen the way it worked, the battery icon says it is only at 80%, in my opinion it is much better to do it this way (in windows s/w) than hidden in the bios so you have no idea it is happening.
When I set up a Samsung tablet 5 or 6 years ago I was presented with the option to only charge to 80% to prolong the battery life. It shows 100% when full but I know it and chose to do it. It wasn't "slipped" in on me.
Yes i agree but prior to this firmware there still was an option to let the system sense and configure for that. Just not an option allways be on that was snuck in.
