I'm a SmartThings convert from a few years ago. I do still have my ST hub online and a few devices connected to it that aren't compatible with HE. I have HubiThings Replica running to share the few devices that are on my ST hub with HE (i.e. a wifi lock, a samsung mini split, and some window shades).
I recently noticed this:
The "mater compatible devices" lists a single matter device.....my ST Hub. Can I connect my ST Hub to HE via matter? I'm curious what this would give me for access? Can anyone shed some light as to what a ST to HE matter connection could do?
Not necessarily. If the devices are already Matter devices, SmartThings is just another Matter controller sharing them with Hubitat. It would only be a Matter bridge if SmartThings were exposing non-Matter SmartThings devices, like Zigbee/Z-Wave devices, to Hubitat as Matter devices.
Ok, so I see alexa devices in the matter list along with my smartthings hub as compatible devices. Those are bugs, right? Or is alexa a matter bridge, too?
I see that you have an aqara m3 hub. So that would let me bring in any aqara device that is connected to it without a hubitat specific driver?
Sorry, if this is creating a tangent.
Yes, SmartThings hub is acting as a Matter controller and can share native Matter devices via multi-admin, that's why I have several matter devices and hubs connected to it.
You cannot add SmartThings to Hubitat as a Matter bridge.
Yes, probably a bug in Hubitat. Alexa/SmartThings are Matter-capable hubs/controllers.
Yes, you can bring Aqara M3 child devices into Hubitat via Matter - this is a real bridge use case.
Just add as a Matter device in Hubitat, and Hubitat built-in "Generic Matter Bridge" driver will pick it up (I am currently using the custom community driver as per my previous post), see below on my test hub:
