Smart Start on iPhone - Camera is pathetic

Why is everything so hard? Trying to scan QR codes for Smart Start on the Hubitat app (iOS) is just pathetic. Can we get any camera control like focus or zoom? It is impossible to scan most QR stickers as is.

I’m not sure what all you’ve tried, but i find that pulling the device / code away from the camera and slowing bring it forward… towards the camera gets the auto focus to kick in. Also being in a well lit room helps, this one always gets me.

Considering the Home app doesn’t have camera controls when scanning matter qr codes this may need to be a feature request through Apple.

Is this a limitation because of Apple? Whoever is at fault, it's absolutely infuriatingly stupid. I can get it to work by doing as you recommend, with most QR codes but not all devices. I have had to take a photo with the iphone camera app, and then email that to myself, pull it up on my laptop, and scan the laptop screen. It is PATHETIC!!! Thank you for reading.

When I get a new device that has QR (whether reqd or optional), I always take a regular picture of it to save anyway, and then I just use that picture for the inclusion.

Unless you need LR mode you can pair manually and enter just the 5 digit security code for S2.

I do find the font size on those QR code borderline microscopic for my aging eyes…..

Some manufacturers use shiny labels that make it easier to reflect light for better scannning. For those who use matte labels then yes putting them on a back lit screen will make it easier for you and your phone camera to read.

Sounds like you have all the proper work arounds in place, just keep in mind cheaper devices tend to use cheaper everything like matte paper. So you’ll know when to expect when the qr code label is not shiny.

Sometimes the issue is just the limitations of physics. It can be really hard to get enough photons to focus on a 9.8 x 7.3 mm sensor to be processed correctly by electrons.
