Sinopé - Recent US Import Duties Experience - Anyone?

Just wondering if anyone has seen the tariff impact and what % it has added.

Thanks

Nope...but if you'll pay the tariff fees I'll order something so you can test it.

They make a good product...and it's pricey, not anywhere near to "undercutting" anything similar made in the Lower 48. Bummer for us who like it.

A few weeks ago I tried to warranty one of their tank monitors which is about a year old. They accepted the warranty claim, but informed me that I would be responsible for import tariffs on the replacement sensor, which would be collected by UPS upon delivery and would exceed 50% of the value of the item.

I told them I would wait until the tariff situation is resolved and deal with a warranty claim then.

The sensor is still working despite a stress crack in the housing, so it was not worth paying anything now.

I thought were supposed to be exceptions to tariffs for situations like this? There isn't any money changing hands, it is a replacement for an existing device. The tax /fee on $0.00 should be $0.00?

I am not at all doubting your experience, but I suspect that somewhere along the line someone is misinterpreting or misapplying the rules. Maybe it is on purpose to protest the tariff situation?

Either way, it is a crappy experience for customers who purchased something prior to these new rules.

I thought the same thing so I did some reading online and found other people experiencing the same thing.

My guess is that the tariff still applies to prevent companies from fraudulently claiming sent items were replacements, or that since there is not an actual exchange (bad item sent back first), it is still considered a transaction.

Might be something else at play. UPS is notorious for charging a significant amount for customs clearance, whether or not the goods are subject to duties. Both types of fees often get confused. Last time I checked, USPS / Canada Post charged a flat $10 for the clearance service but there were a couple of strikes in 2025 that discouraged businesses from using them at all…
