Sensor for outdoor flagpole

Any suggestions for a sensor and/or method to determine if a flagpole is in its mount outside? I have lights for the flag at night but don't want to turn the lights on if the flag isn't there during bad weather. Outdoor zigbee or zwave contact sensors don't seem to be a popular item.

First thought without critical thinking: Ecolink DW-ZWAVE2.5-ECO. It allows for an externally wired magnet and sensor, which can be very small - an inch long and less than a half inch wide and a magnet or if the end of the pole is iron. Two wires lead back into an indoor space and connect to the largish, for a contact sensor, Ecolink device.

Check Etsy for 3-D printed outdoor housings for contact sensors.

I use this for my mailbox contact sensor - the reed switch is in the box and is connected to the contact sensor. Has been working for about 5 years now.

OR other way around. When the flag is stored for bad weather, is it always in the same place? Put the sensor there in the weather safe flag storage location.
