I have a switch in the middle of my apartment that would be great to control all/most of the lighting. It’s wired as a switch loop with no neutral and I was a little confused after looking into my options.
What I think I can do is put a relay in the fixture box and use a scene controller at the switch box.
What I’m not sure of is what scene controllers will work in this scenario and what relay to use.
It controls a single light, a smart wifi Govee ceiling fixture, and if I understand correctly the relay would have power all the time and be able to receive commands to turn the fixture on/off from the wall mounted remote or elsewhere?
I will try to integrate the Govee fixture (H60A1) with Govee Integration V2 to gain some extra control via Hubitat, but I read the driver is inconsistent with this model.
The main goal is to have the Govee fixture able to receive commands at any time and also control it from the wall (zen37 looks like what I’m looking for).
Is there a particular relay that would work well in this situation along with the zen37?
The switch leg runs from where you will be putting the relay. So while you are in that box you could reconfigure the dead-end switch leg to be a simple power feed. Then you could put in a ZEN32 or any other type of powered scene controller.
You did mention this was an apartment...... As a tenant you aren't allowed to make such wiring changes. Check your lease but you might be opening up a liability you don't really want...
Yeah, I did that in my Laundry room, the only room in my house without neutral to the switch box.
I put a Zigbee relay up in the fixture where neutral is, and I rewired the physical switch in the switch box to be the relay switch, instead of using a scene switch, using the existing wires.
In your case, you can pass hot and neutral down to the box from the fixture, using the two wires that the switch loop used to use. Then you can use any scene switch, since you will have live and neutral at that switch box now to power it.
Edit: I see @CuriousB posted basically the same thing while I was writing my post
Yea. I would remove the switch and just connect the two wires together in the box with a wago or twist wire hut. That would make the circut on all the time.
Why are you adding a relay if you already have a smart light.
Can you clarify what you mean by the driver is inconsistent. I am the developer of that integration so if something needs to be done i can see about what can be done to enhance it.
I control a variety of Govee devices using either remote switches or regular zooz switches in smartbulb mode. Unfortunately the lack of a nuetral wire prevents the Zooz switch option.
I don't think you want to put any relay on the circut as that may not work good with a smart device on the circut.
As the other poster mentioned what limitations are there with an apartment.
Now knowing this is a apt and a Govee light i would just get a zen37 and nothing else. There is no need for a relay. If you want to prevent the switch from being flipped put tape over the switch or find a cover for it. Use button controller built in app to program the button presses to do your needs and use the Govee integration V2 to control the device. If you have any issues with the Govee Integration v2 let me know. I think we are over complicating this.
I’m renting from family and I have the blessing to do what I like as long as I fix it on the way out.
I figured out my 1.5 year old daughter loved the one color changing bulb we had so I got a bunch more. I’m looking to make this switch a location to be able to turn the fixture on/off (Govee H60A1), reset the lights to white and set a few scenes.
@mavrrick58 I had only briefly looked into it and haven’t tried it yet but saw that it worked better with the previous model. I’ll take your word for it and give it a shot!
And for some reason I was looking at the zen32, I see the zen37 is a battery powered wall remote and will do exactly what I need it to do by itself. I’ll swap in a paddle switch to tape down and mount it right above.
Previous model of zooz remote switch like the zooz zen34 or of the hub. I have several of the zen 34's and they have worked well. I have thought about getting a few zen 37s because of the additional buttons. Keep in mind these also support multitap as well so a 4 button device has like twenty options with multi tap.
If you have permission to do what you want with the place the i would just get a 2 wire wago and connect the switch wires to it. The zen34/37 come with a plate you can mount in the the electrical box to make the remote switch look like a regular decora switch. It is magnetic to hols the remote in the spot. It would give you a place to keep it and look good. Just something to consider
