I have a C-8 running 2.4.0.151 and am I have a problems with Rule Machine app.
Just some background in my basement I have 3 banks of lights each controlled by a Leviton Z-wave switch. Each are using the “Generic Z-Wave Smart Switch” driver that is built in. I also have a Virtual Switch that I use on my dashboards and Alexa and etc. I have two rules one that allows me to activate the virtual switch turning on all three lights and another which allows me to turn off all three lights. I mean I’m lazy I want to hit one button instead of all three. Those work great. Because I’m OCD I made a third rule which basically states if I independently turn on all three lights I want the virtual switch to indicate on, that works fine (though it’s probably sending a unnecessary command to activate the three switches which are already on) now where I’m running into trouble is I’ve been trying to make a fourth rule that if one of lights are turned off it turns the virtual switch indication to off. The problem is when the virtual switch is turned off it turns the remaining lights off. Which I don’t want to happen I just the Indication of the virtual
Switch to change. I’ve searched and it gives me multiple different instructions but they all seem to refer to options and choices no longer in use.
I would suggest using a Group from the Groups and Scenes app instead of trying to re-create a similar approach manually. Room Lighting can also work, but it may be a bit more difficult to set up if you are new. Both have options that can set the group/activator device states in accordance to your preferences with respect to the actual states.
It is usually helpful to provide specifics as to what you've tried or read about already, so if the above doesn't help, please share more.
Basically what I had tried was in the rule machine online it said there were options that allowed you to change the virtual switch’s state without activating any associated rule that would normally activate with the state change.
I'm pretty sure this exact behavior is accomplished by using a Group device from the built-in Groups and Scenes app (as suggested by @bertabcd1234). The Group device it creates works like the virtual switch you are trying to manually control.
Could you post a link to this? Because it isn't true. Fundamentally, changes in state define triggers in the Rule Machine. So whatever you've found online is erroneous and needs to be corrected or deleted.
I feel like using an app and device built exactly for this purpose, like a Groups and Scenes group device or RL activator, would be simple. But until we hear back from the OP, we're just talking among ourselves.
I’ve looked and look and can’t find the web page that I was reading before. If you google it , it gives you an AI answer but swear it also had specific website.
Sorry had to work and take care of other priorities the last few days. I did have a chance to play with room lighting today. I got the he initial behavior, but can’t get the virtual switch to show on when the three individual lights are selected on, and to extinguish if it was illuminated and one of the individual lights are turned off
What do you have selected under Means to Activate Lights > Activate Lights Options for Select Indicator Use? You should bwbablentonfons some combination of options that does what you want, this probably being where you want to start.
I got it figured out, I was still trying to use my virtual switch but got rid of that and used room activator and everything works fine.
The only annoyance is that if I control the lights individually, it takes a count of 5 for the room activator to recognize it should change, but really shouldn’t be controlling individually much if I want all on or off.
