Rooms UI - Child Devices

The new Rooms UI is a great addition--even as "foundational release" it's very useful to save on scrolling when you have hundreds of devices/activities/groups/etc. Even in its current state, it also makes for a pretty decent "quick-and-dirty" mobile interface.

One thing I've found that the dev team is probably aware of, but just in case, I'll document it here is that you cannot assign Child Devices directly to a Room--only its Parent Device.

Hopefully this will come soon in a future enhancement, but for now, these are the reasons I need this:

  1. Some Parent Devices have no commonly-used end-user functionality, (e.g., Harmony Hub or Fibaro Double Switch 2 FGS-223), so including them in the Devices for a Room just clutters things up and confuses my other non-HE addicted users that only need to see the Child Devices
  2. Similar situation for some Child Devices with no end-user functionality (e.g., LED Color on an Inovelli Switch LZW30) where the Parent Device is all that's needed
  3. Some integrations like the Home Assistant Device Bridge have a bunch of Child Devices that all belong in different rooms, but I can only put the Parent Device (and hence all of its Child Devices) in a single Room

Thanks again!

You can assign Child devices to a room from within their device page and they will show up on the Rooms page then, but will not display their Room in the Devices list.

I thought the device picker would fix my issues but I have a monoprice dual relay and I canโ€™t assign a room or itโ€™s child. Itโ€™s a component.

It is not letting you select or create a room from the dropdown?

Nope. The drop down is locked @gopher.ny.

Strange. Maybe there is some code difference between my child device (using one of my drivers) and those of the built-in components? Be good to know that also since I obviously want my drivers to be as close to "standard" as possible (besides the logging, I do not like the standard style of logging).

Same here. I tried on a few different child devices using in-box "Component" drivers, and none of them would let me change the room assignment from the device detail page (drop down box simply does nothing when clicked).

Guess I should have tried that during the beta, but I missed it. I did a once over on rooms during the beta, but since I have no plans to use it 'in real life' I guess I got lazy in testing. Sorry @gopher.ny

Glad it is not just me, and I am hoping this is addressed soon - Have a few things that would be great to get the Child Device functioning... Greenwave Z-Wave powerstrips, Zooz Z-Wave Multi-Relays, Vision Z-Wave dual relays, and single or double Shelly devices will not get added to the Rooms at the Child Device level.

These rooms are going to be great!

The change to enable child devices' room assignment will be in the next hotfix.
