Folks, so i'm setting up my HE environment and trying to make sense of everything, at the moments getting everything going with the Hub mesh setup, using two hubs. I have a c7 and c8 hubs, the plan is to use c7 for dashboards, integrations (lutron/hue), apps, and the rule machine. c8 will sit basically in the middle of the house serving all my zigbee and zwave devices which i have many. Currently, i created all the rooms on c8 and i thought maybe they will mirror to c7, but that doesnt look to be the case. Where does it make sense for me to have rooms, based on what i put above. As i set up all my devices now, on either hub, i do share them to the other hub, so they're available on both. Thanks!
I have a setup with some similarities, and ended-up setting up the rooms on both hubs, though I really only use them on the one with my dashboards, rules, etc.
Actually, it was you who told me about your setup sometime back and I decided to do a similar setup as I like the separation you have.
So as far the rooms, that’s what I’m trying to figure out. Is there any reason to even have them on the c8, which really just serves zigbee and zwave, whereas c7 is what has all the automation, apps and dashboards. I initially setup the rooms on a c8, but I think I really need them c7 instead and I don’t see the use for them on a c8..
I wish they can just be synced across both hubs…
Ah cool! There is currently no use that I can think of to setup the rooms on the C8.
Ok coo, thats pretty much what im thinking. So since, we're on the subject, let me verify few other things with you. Do you end up sharing the devices between each hub, so all the devices are on each hub? As an, on your integration hub, you link all your Lutron and Hue devices to other hubs, and on your zwave/zigbee hub, you link those to your other hubs?
All devices are on my main hub. Some are integrations with Lutron/Hue, others are shared via hub mesh from the Radios hub.
I do not share devices back from the main hub (Lutron/Hue) to the Radios hub devices.
Note that I now have 4 hubs, and devices from 3 of the hubs are shared to the main hub (4th). No devices are shared back to the other 3 hubs, or between them. I have a “Hub and spoke” model where everything goes to the main hub for processing/dashboard.
Got ya. And just to make sure we're on the same page, upi consider your main hub, one that runs your rules, rooms and dasboards, correct?
Yes, the main hub has all my rules, dashboards and rooms on it.
Got ya. So if you don’t mind me asking, with another hub in the mix, what does your setup look like now? I will be adding a third hub as well, as I need better coverage for my back yard and the pool house.
Essentially the same. Some devices on one hub, some on another. Everything goes back to the main hub via hub mesh. All rules are on the main hub.
Are you doing any specific separation for specific reasons?
I initially used the second hub for resource intensive apps (echo speaks was one of them initially, not as much now). Then I added some Zigbee devices that were non-standard and wouldn’t play well with my Sinopé thermostats (the thermostats kept kicking the non-standard devices off the mesh). So I had the thermostats on the main hub, and the non-standard devices on the other. I continued adding non-standard devices to that hub.
Later, I had so much on my main hub that I decided to move all my Zigbee and Z-Wave devices to another one. This made things easier on both hubs.
Got ya. So i was initially thinking i may need the 3rd hub for better coverage, but i think both zwave and zigbee mesh that i already was able to achieve between just two hubs is doing the job nicely. Im actually able to reach my devices out in the poolhouse without a hub sitting there, which is awesome. What, im thinking about, is maybe separating zigbee and zave between two hubs.. do you think that makes sense? Or.. i still have all my Sylvania/Osram devices i need to add and i read that those may cause mesh issues, so maybe getting those on its own hub will make sense.
I’m finding that having a hub with all standard Zigbee and Z-Wave device works very well, so I would recommend that. You could absolutely put the Sylvania/Osram devices on the main hub, that would be a great idea!
