Ring alarm sensors - standalone?

I see ring contact sensors v1 and v2 are listed as compatible. For some reason I am almost positive that I read you needed to have a ring alarm subscription for these to be usable? Is that just incorrect, no longer the case?

Any reason to pick v1 or v2?

Or if someone wants to recommend a good/better contact sensor option? Everything I come across is mentioning ones that are too finicky to work reliably or simply no longer available

Both are z-wave devices, so they can pair directly to Hubitat. No subscription required.
