Returning home after Night mode is set

Hi all, i have the usual day, evening, night & away modes, with security home set for night and full on security set for away.

I have the HSM set for resume timed operation when returning from AWAY, my concern is, if i return from AWAY and the then default timed action is NIGHT, will my home still be semi armed rather than disarmed and let me in without triggers?

My home goes NIGHT mode at 10pm and arms just contact sensors, so therefore returning from AWAY after 10pm could still leave the doors protected.

Am i right in assuming this?

Personally, I solved this by adding another mode, Sleeping. Day and Night are disarmed, Away is Armed Away and Sleeping is Armed Night. That way I can also set lights to not turn on by motion in the bedroom while I'm sleeping and have the bathroom lights come on VERY dimmly while in sleeping mode.

If that solution doesn't work for you, I would recommend not tying Armed Night to Night mode but instead arm-night manually after you arrive home. Even if you have HSM disarm by the transition to Night mode, that will only happen when the system goes from Away to Night or Day to Night. You can still manually Arm Night the system while in Night mode.

Furthermore, I don't believe that HSM can go directly from Armed Away to Armed Night without being disarmed first. I tried it manually and it did not change from Armed Away. Which makes sense. If you're changing the mode you'd have to get in first, which means it would have to be disarmed.

Thanks Ryan, I was considering using Rule machine to deal with returning home, that if it's after a certain time of night to go into eveining mode then delay by 5 minutes and switch to Night mode, then remove the timed return function in HSM. I think rule machine will give more flexibility.

Do you mean in Mode manager? I think you can keep the settings in mode manager and a link between mode and HSM. You just need an additional mode to do it. I think that will be your quickest and cleanest solution.

Yes, something like that could work. I had pretty much the same issue and setup as @shaun_inuk. Similar to @Ryan780 I added a new mode I call "Late" or "Home Late". I don't have it setup to turn on automatically, but only by Google or dashboard command. In HSM I set my Day and Late modes to disarm HSM. I also set up a RM so that when the mode becomes Late the driveway and entry lights turn on. Then it switches the system back to "Night" mode after a delay of 10 minutes. I also have a light switch that turns on Night mode I can use if I want.

We haven't had much opportunity to use it (I guess our life has been too boring ) yet. There's lots of ways to to this using modes.

I'm truly curious. Why does a mode need to dictate home security or control how things work? Couldn't it be a condition?

To simplify arming and disarming, you can tie the status of HSM to the system's mode. Since mode manager has built in setting to handle when going to away, home, day, night mode...the user doesn't have to build rules to do that. It makes it much simpler for new users.
