Reserve old IP on new C8

Migrating from C7 to C8, would like to use the old IP address of the C7 with the C8. Not planning to use the C7 any longer, would that create any conflicts?

Actually if you have any ip based integration it will make it better

After your migration is complete you may want to power up the C7, reset your radios, soft reset the hub, etc. But as long as you're using DHCP it should find a new address just fine.

That was my thought so I don’t have to redo other integrations & links. Thank you for the response.

I'm wrapping mine in five layers of tin foil first, so it doesn't try to attack the C-8 that replaced it. Lotta bad blood there...

Somethings may require a new auth because of tokens but that's it.

How would one use the old I address on the New C8? Doesn't the router just assign them? My router is an Asus RT_AX3000.

EDIT: And yes, I did have a IP Reservation set on the router for the old hub, if that helps or hurts.

And a slight twist on this concept.

I DO plan to reuse the old C7, but I don't care if that gets a new IP address. is this all still somewhat doable? I won't be using it with Zwave or Zigbee devices, I plan to use it for cloud integrations (Ecobee, Rachio Etc) with the radios turned off, in hub mesh to another hub that actually controls the rules and automations.

I believe you should be able to change the IP as you wish in your router’s setting

I let the new hub get a random ip and used that for setup. Once that was complete and I shut down the old hub, I updated my router settings to give the new hub the IP I wanted. I did have to restart the new hub before it started using that IP as there is no option in settings to release and renew an IP lease

There are two wasys this works.

  1. You use DHCP reservation from the router(My recomendation)
  2. You set the ip staticly in the configuration of the device. (can also work but generally best to do outside of the DHCP range on your router.

The way I did this was as follows.

  1. Performed the upgrade to my C7 to the latest firmware and completed the backup. II also plugged in the C-8 to initiate it's setup.
  2. Once backup was completed and the C-7 was in a final state for the migration confirmed the backup was present in the Hubitat cloud and ready for restore.
  3. Powered off the C-7 Hub.
  4. Performed the restore the C-8 and let it get fully updated.
  5. While the restore was taking place, I went into my router setup and removed the DHCP reservation for the C-7 and added the reservation for the C-8.
  6. After the restore was completed to the hub it rebooted. Because I changed the IP and it was retrieved on restart i had to manually change the url at that time to go the hub.
  7. Everything was good. At this point you will need to probably re-auth all of your integrations that are cloud based. I had to re-link Alexa and Google home. Action tiles sees the C-8 as a new hub so i need to go through and completely re-setup all of those items with it.

In the DHCP reservation page of the router’s settings, edit the reservation so that the IP address points to the MAC address of the C8 instead of the C7’s MAC address.
