Replace feature not working

I have a fan switch that is not working. wanted to use the Replace feature. When i click on the replace button i immediately get this message.

Any idea on how to use this feature? It would be nice if it works to prevent the 'virtual device' replace method on the more involved devices.

Update.

I was able to get the replace feature to work after clicking refresh and then repair. Once the repair process completed its run, the Replace feature allowed me to add the replacement device.
