[RELEASE] Day Lights - an iteration of Circadian Daylight

So I’m not sure if this is a driver issue, or something else (on .184 ATM).

As you can see below, after changing my bulb to colour mode, I had to screw around the level and coloured temp sings to get flights to finally set the colour temp correctly.

I’m thinking it’s a matter driver issue, but here are the logs.

Good morning Derek - there's a lot going on in those logs! To me, it looks like you have two different modified versions of the source code each running a single instance (with the same name) controlling the same light. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it could just be my eyes (and brain) aren't fully awake yet.

The first thing I would try is to turn off those special Lifx switches (Reset color temperature and Force CT mode) since you're not using those bulbs anymore.

That's the way I'm running the app now with my lighting. I've got 8 different modes set for different times of the day. Using Day Lights in conjunction with Coco-Hue. I brought my Hue lights in with the scenes for the different color temps. Then looking at the states for each bulb in Coco-Hue, set those color temps in Kelvin into my modes in Day Lights to get the color temps I wanted in my home through the day. However I think I'll control the dimmer aspect with either Hue switches or my Inovelli Blue 2 in 1 dimmers. Still configuring everything Day Lights is capable of controlling. It's an awesome app, thanks for building it for us!

I should probably explain what I was doing, as that isnt the case:

I was first making colour and level changes in HomeKit, and when Daylights didnt self correct back to CT and the correct temp, I then did it via the in the device driver in HE. That latter is when it finally started behaving. Im wondering if HE wasnt getting updated device attributes.

Part way thru, I also turned on the LIFX settings in an attempt to force CT mode.

Hopefully that makes sense?

If you find certain Hue bulbs stop responding to CT changes or you find you want to ensure your Inovelli notification bar stays in sync with the level, do the following with your devices AND also setup a RM that whenever CT or level changes via variable from Day Lights you refresh your Hue bulbs.

The Hue bulbs and its group device stay in CT and level sync and the dimmer that say group device stay in sync.

I would love to see Day Lights updated to do the following:

Add device refresh prior to commanding CT or level changes.
Is there a way we can have all our instances of our Day Lights consolidated like Rule Machine, etc?

You have "Living Room Lamps" in both Color temperature devices and Dimmable devices which goes against the guidance that a single device should only be selected in one of the groups.

I also wonder if "Living Room Lamps" is actually a group that contains Living Room Lamp 1 (Hue) and Living Room Lamp 2 (Hue). If that's the case then the guidance is being stomped on mercilessly and the actual devices may be receiving some confusing commands.

That's an interesting idea creating a parent/child relationship for Day Lights instances. I took a quick glance at the development docs and it seems doable but would probably result in a whole new app. I might play around with that, but it won't be until after the first of the year.

Correct that Living Room Lamp group contains those two hue bulbs and the dimmer. I will try taking out the group in the dimmable group.

In this setup, the bulbs are receiving each CT command only twice and it is orderly, so nothing confusing. It's just redundant. I actually may remove it because the RM for refreshing off of the variable change is actually occuring before Hubitat passes the commands to the bulbs and that may be what is fixing my loss of sync with the group.

To keep my Inovelli LED bar in sync, I just use [RELEASE] Switch Bindings 2.0. Switch Bindings works really well and I just set the Hue Group as the master allowing for one-way sync. Day Lights sets the Hue color/level and Switch Bindings sets the LED bar.

I would suggest taking your Living Room Lamps group out of both sections and just having the two bulbs in Color temperature devices and the dimmer in Dimmable devices.

I did and I think it is only being reliable because of my hue bulb refresh triggering off of the variable change.

How are you bringing the Hue bulbs into Hubitat? What version number are you using with Hubitat. If you are using either CoCoHue or the built-in (as of 2.4 I think) they use v2 API and shouldn’t need the refresh.

They are directly paired with Hubitat - No Hue Bridge. I then use the Auto Group Bind in the Inoveli Blue Series Dimmer driver to directly bind the bulbs to the dimmer when I add the Bulbs and Dimmer to the a group.

I had used the Group Bulb Dimmer for Google Home and for Day Lights, however if any of the hue bulbs drops its status or doesn't report its status when it turned on, the group shows it as off. Google Home being out of sync has its obvious problems when you tell it turn off. For Day Lights, commands to group device thinks it is off and will not pass it on.

So far my change of not using the group device at all in Day Lights and only having the bulb in the CT and dimmer in the Dimmable with the dimmer in the disable was an improvement, but only with the refreshing of the bulbs when the dimmer state changes, when Day Light CT/level variable changes, or every 30 minutes.

What is nice is Hubitat prioritizes RM over Day Lights so once the variables change, it executes the refresh before Day Light commands the bulb.

I overlooked the fact that your dimmer device is controlling the level of the bulbs in the CT group! So your bulbs are getting a CT and level command from Day Lights, and then your dimmer device is getting another level command from Day Lights which is then (redundantly) passed on to the bulbs. In theory you shouldn't even need the dimmer device specified at all in Day Lights.

You are correct that Day Lights does not send any command to a device that is off. I don't have any Hue bulbs, but it seems unusual that they would drop their status or not report their state.

Hue bulbs are great, but pairing them to Hubitat directly is not recommended. Generally not recommended for any Zigbee smart bulbs.

I have 12 Hue bulbs and 25 Hue 6" downlights paired directly to HE. They are and always have been rock solid, which is something I can't say about most other things around here.

Many of the downlights also have their color temp controlled by Day Lights.

If I'm not mistaken, there was a concern about flaky repeaters in some smart bulbs, but I don't think that applies to Hue. Or at least, the current generation. Everything I have here is at most 3 years old. I have a couple of older Sengled zigbee bulbs as well, but they don't repeat.

Most of my Hues are happily integrated via the native Hue integration, but I do have a couple (each a few years old?) paired direct to HE -- they're in our bathroom (bound to an Inovelli Blue), so they see a lot of regular use, and they work flawlessly. And they are total rockstars as zigbee repeaters to boot.

Interesting. I found my Hubitat was fine, but the Hue bulbs weren't reliable when directly paired to Hubitat.

Im using the native Hubitat integration + Hue Hub v2, and have found it rock solid too.
