We get a lot of wildlife in our backyard. I have a Hue Outdoor motion sensor that does a great job of detecting it. Would like to add a weatherproof camera that will record say 10 seconds of video when motion is detected. Can anyone recommend a camera that would be able to meet this requirement? Obviously I need to initiate the capture from HE.
You might be able to do that with Blue Iris or Xeoma
This is definitely possible with Blue Iris and a camera that is compatible (which is a huge number of cameras). Although that requires an always-on Windows PC and a paid license for Blue Iris (well worth it if one is interested in using IP cameras).
However since many (most?) outdoor cameras have their own built-in motion sensors, the OPโs use case could probably be accomplished with one of those and would be less complex.
Something like Arlo, Ring, Blink or Reolink Argus come to mind.
I used to do this when I had my cameras on a PC running iSpy. When a motion sensor on Hubitat sensed activity, a RM rule would send an HTTP string to the PC running iSpy that would instruct it to take a clip from that camera. Worked like a champ. I first implemented this on SmartThings but, because it required custom code, it had to run in the cloud and suffered from latency and outages. When I moved to Hubitat I was able to port it over to run locally. Then I asked Bruce if we could have the ability to send an HTTP from RM and he showed me how - so I was able to get rid of the custom code and configure it with an RM Rule. It's one of the things that really won me over about Hubitat. I don't use that rule anymore because I moved all my cameras to Camect . . . but that would be another (longer) story.
I stopped using Blue Iris in favor of Camect, and also really like it. But I agree thatโs outside the scope of what the OP asked about.
However, @wiegout if you want to go down a rabbit hole of having multiple (wired) IP cameras in/around the home that can record 24/7 but flag certain motion events for notifications or subsequent review with a pretty impressive AI algorithm, all locally, let us know
.
Hadn't heard of Camect before. Looking at the product now. Interesting.
I have a LOT of Blink cameras at the moment after years of various Foscam/Amcrest IP cams. I link Blink for what it is, but yearn for more control. Amazon bought Blink, killed integrations and has really kept a tight lid on what you can do with them. The little niche they serve, they serve well. But I miss having more say in things. I'll check out Camect. I'm biased away from Windows product as since I retired I swore I'd stop screwing with that OS. I'm all Linux/MacOS/RaspOS around here now.
Thanks for the tip on this product.
Camect is basically an appliance. It's some form of Linux under the covers - I haven't dug into it. I have found it is much like Lutron - "It just works".
