Recommending Hubitat to a normal person

Was about to make the same observation.

What's your phone number people can use for support? (Joking....)

I've recommended this system to numerous people. Age ranges all over the place. I have told numerous people, this system is not for you. Age ranges all over the place. And no, we are not normal. Normal people do not invest so much time and effort into something that really does not need it and also routinely come to this forum. I look at so much irrelevant data daily, because it's there and I can. I routinely look for things to fix/improve/break. I'll admit the breaking part is not intentional, but does give me something to work on and fix, which ironically, makes me happy. Provided, it's something I broke  Until I can't fix it and get frustrated and come to the forums..........again. Which I do anyway to see what someone else has tried, created, broken, etc.

I admit that recommending HE, or any other system, to non-techies is probably risky. But in my case they are both good friends and very understanding of limitions and tolerant when things don't go quite right.

For example. One guy has a large shop across the street from his house. The overhead door has a three-button system, open/close/stop. I installed a relay system tied into the push buttons so he can run it from his phone. The close relay quit working a couple weeks ago. Tried everything I could remotely but finally figured out it went belly up for some reason. Took me a couple weeks to get another one and find the time to go and install it. He was very understandable and not upset at all.

You certainly need to be careful when setting someone else up with HE and Automation. I think the most important thing we forget to account for when what we are doing for someone else is simply designing it for the person not what we think they want or need.

I gave a extra C7 to a friend. He had a few basic asks for automations and for the most part they just run for him. On the rare occasion they don't work for some reason it is generally a quick check that has most of the time ended up being a failed device and not the hub. I think the important thing is to keep things fairly simple and never break manual control. This also provides them the means of getting a reasonable working setup and letting them figure out if they want to expand it. A few quick automations may be all the person ever needs, and the hub may do those simple tasks like clockwork 99.9% of the time.

The C7 at my buddies house has worked great now for a few years. I periodically go update/reboot/check on him with it. Generally speaking the problems have been the DB has corrupted a few times from him simply pulling the power and then he had devices that dropped off wifi and so the hub couldn't talk to them. I have since upgraded him to a Unifi Express router and now his wifi is pretty solid. The hub has worked well.

That said his configuration is very simple and mostly consists of a few zwave switchs, Govee Wifi devices, and a Ecobee.

My point is simply don't encourage that something that will require tinkering. You can provide something with HE if you design it right that is very stable and usable without problems. Just make sure you choose what you recommend wisely

Told him to disregard my recommendation.
I feel calmer already.

No, we are not normal - and proud of that!

My experience is similar to othersโ€™ here.

I gave away a C7 to a friend and he has setup his own devices and automations with my guidance. He is fully independent.

I also gave a C5 to my father who afterwards purchased himself a C8. He only has a few devices and only require a few simple automations which I have all setup for him. He is fully dependent on me, but is current setup is working well for him.

Finally, I gave a C8 to my sons who just moved to a new house. Iโ€™ve setup devices for them, but will limit automations to what they want and need.
