Rant - To scream or not to scream?

So I had an electrician here yesterday as we had a circuit go bad and I did not feel like messing it with. The guy showed up, without warning cut the power to the house. Hard shutting down my computers, pi and hubitat hubs. Upon restoration of power I had a GE Jasco on/off switch die on me. It will not control the load, goes click click click constantly, and sends on reports to the hub at the same rates of click click click. Ok no big deal. I have a Lutron dimmer sitting around I will just replace it. After an hour of searching I cannot find the damn dimmer anywhere. It was sitting here for 2 years in the way, waiting till i finally start building my new home. Of course when I need it is vanished into the ether.

I contacted ge/jasco they say they will send me a replacement - lets hope it comes.

Anyways the situation had my pretty fired up, so I figured I would post it here for other like minded people to laugh at me. Anyone else have the horrible luck I do?

Sorry you had to endure that. That's horrible. But I would recommend putting your various hubs on a UPS. At least you can power them down gently. Wouldn't have helped with the GE/Jasco switch though.

The horse is out of the barn now, but you can always lose power for many reasons. I suggest you get a UPS for your computer, Hubitat, etc. and, we all scream for ice cream.

Lol yeah the ups has been on the list for a minute. I guess it is time to move it to the top of the list.

A little googling says this is a fairly common issue with these switches (i know many of you have never had a problem) hopefully they send one of the enbrighten switches as a replacement.

Another thing to consider even though it would not have helped in this case is a whole home surge protector.

This is one that gets rated quite highly:

I would also recommend surge protectors at the air-handler and the outdoor compressor/condenser. There are several options - this is the one I have:

Leviton makes surge outlets as well:

Grumble. I didn’t know that. I just put in a bunch of the GE/Jasco smart motion switch & dimmer devices (26931/26933) with the very nice component drivers from @JasonJoel that decouple the motion sensors from the switch/dimmer, and that permit operation mode change from RM. Not only is this a great combination, it addresses the comments from guests who believed that the previous motion sensors in the bathrooms were cameras.

I have this one. Works well. I have my pi and hubs on it.

had to buy a step down connector.

I have a whole house surge protector AND whole house UPS system. Solves all those problems.

:point_up_2: this!!! Me too - though I only have a PI and a single hub so no stepdown connector unless I've made some egregious miscalculation.

I have my hubs and on a 8 port poe netgear. Would this battery be able to handle running all the devices off a single port?

I've put UPS's on all my major electronics for years. Just cheap insurance really. I have one on my PC, and one on my Tivo, and one running the Hub and my cable modem and router.

I had to get a step down becuase my two hubs took the 5v connection, so I needed to step down the 9v for my pi

There is a 12v connection available. You'd have to do the math.

If you need a medium-small form-factor for devices that are spread about, this one is well suited. Below is Amazon link, but Costco has them online for $45!

If space is an issue this works well too. I needed something to sit on my countertop and wanted small but I wanted some capacity.

I'm looking at the Intermatic Whole House Surge Protection IG2240-IMSK, as it has replaceable modules....

I'm undecided though. Any reason you chose the Intermatic?

S.

Lots of HVAC service guys here use the Intermatic unit here on the outdoor condenser. That's I use it on both the air-handler and the condenser.

Sounds like you have made good luck actually. I don't believe in good luck or bad luck being dealt by the universe. I believe It all depends on how you respond. You seem to have acted calmly and reasonably. The electrician was a complete tool for cutting your power without warning. Your response to the situation got you a replacement switch at no cost.

Despite the old saying, a fly will not be attracted to honey or vinegar, but you get the meaning. However they are attracted to BS

Me too. Small ones - just enough for the generator to start and the transfer switch to kick in... and then enough to transfer back when street power is restored.
