Problem with rule machine and custom attributes

I'm having a problem with rule machine and custom attributres.
When I use attribute type of stirng I cannot do greater than etc. comparisions.
When I use integer I cannot do any comparisons.

So I change the type type to "number" then I can do comparisons in rule machine , BUT
the comparisions cause an error in the base code..
