Does anyone have a good multi season presence sensor for a toddler?
iPhone XR or Galaxy 10.
I was thinking along the same lines, @njanda... What? They don't keep their phone nearby?
But humor aside, Presence sensing is one of those 'less than ideal' components, independent of age. It doesn't seem to be a hard thing to do, but evidence shows that clearly it is. One would think that by now, we'd have per person, room specific location. 50 year old PIR technology seems to be the best at detecting 'people, dogs, cats' in a room.
Come on...that was funny! Somebody's got a stick up their butt.
It’s certainly seemed a strange request to me, living in Australia but ...,.,...
FYI There are “tracking collars” for dogs that you might be able to use as a belt on a little fella !
Stop it.
I mean, come on. This is even worse than the guy who wanted to put a smart switch on his garbage disposal.
@eric6, seriously now, I chose not to have kids but just last week I heard about this Aussie product
just be sure it's not this variety:
That's totally different. That's a GPS tracker intended for bigger kids so you can find them if they're lost. Not for toddlers wandering away from home. Also, it's real time tracking, not a presence sensor with a timeout. Very very different product.
A dog collar? Around a child's neck? How barbaric!
Now, an embedded RFID tag, that's much more subtle and appropriate.
There you go.
he he he
One of our locals tried that and it didn't work out as expected.
"Not so convenient.."
If all you want to do is detect if a toddler leaves the property for whatever reason you could attach one of those SmartThings presence sensors somewhere to clothing.. and then have a rule that sends you an alert if sensor is out of range, something like that. Or maybe a non-HE solution is a "Tile Pro" - thetilapp.com
Otherwise dog collar is the way to go..
It was meant sarcastically.
OK, I like to have a good laugh as much as the next person, but on a serious note...
I'm not sure about a presence sensor for a toddler, but as a grandparent with a pool, I am extremely paranoid about the little kiddos getting outside without my knowledge. They can be very sneaky, turn your back for a minute to empty the washing machine or something and boom! They could get out.
My solution, which thank goodness I've not yet needed, is contact sensors on every door and speakers plus chimes to announce when the doors are open. I probably ought to put those announcements in a rule that I can pause when we have no visitors, as we don't need that level of notification ALL the time!
I really like the Ring Floodlight Cams for our backyard (one over the garage the other facing the backyard from the house). Any cam with motion detection/alerts would work.
I think I am going to do the same thing with a door announcement rule. We have a grandson who is just 15 months and has been very mobile since one year. He loves door knobs and latches (and he is tall enough to reach them) and he has opened the front door more than once. Good idea!
I’m curious for more details about the OP’s intended use case.
That's exactly what got me into StaplesConnect in 2014. I put a door sensor on the sliding glass door to the pool. The kids then discovered using another door didn't cause the alarm to sound.. so that meant, door sensor #2 Two more door sensors and suddenly I had a perimeter alert system. It's all been a tumble downhill since, as I approach 200 devices.
And to think that had you walked down another aisle in Staples, you might have just got yourself a Pool Fence.
