Power loss restore recommendations

A ups died so i took precautions and did a soft restore and subsequent backup restore. Is that what is recommended, or is just a restore enough?

@bobbyD

IIRC the restore should do a soft reset as part of its process.

Just curious why a soft reset is needed? I admit I haven’t been following too close on the forums. But I’ve been doing a basement remodel and have had to cut power to my outlets a few times to reroute some electrical wiring and my UPS died while I was working on everything and admittedly I forgot to shut down my c7 hubs (I have 3). So far they’ve booted up and continued to work just fine but am I missing something by not doing a soft reset or just getting lucky to not have any DB corruption?

You could say being lucky. The key is that though allot of us are kind of loud about always shut down properly the likelihood of a problem from not doing so is fairly slim. The busier your hub is though the chances go up.

The reason this is a problem is that just like any computer, if data is in flight or partially written you can have data in the database that isn't good. That data depending on where it is and what uses it can have very negative impacts to your environment. I have suffered from Database corruption twice. Both I believe were related to Ecobeee Suites and the events presented themselves in different ways. One time my hub DB just grew and grew until it was over 1.5GB in size. The second one i don't really know what happened other then my hub did a hard lock and then rebooted like twice after i restarted it. After the second reboot it appeared to be wiped clean. I went in and restored it from a previous backup that was local and then created a new manual backup and did a soft reset from that.

The Big things with soft reset is that:

  1. They only cost you a few min to perform
  2. They have zero negative impacts to your setup
  3. Have a decent likely hood of fixing things you can't even see.

Just because you don't see or haven't experienced obvious impact from a corrupt database doesn't mean there isn't bad data in it either. It is possible that you have corrupt data, but it just isn't being used in a way that triggers a bad experience.
