Pairing in-place or near the hub?

I have several new Zooz battery powered devices that I need to get included and set up. I already have some, so this isn't an "I have a problem I need help with thread." I'm familiar with the process and don't really expect many issues.

But, I have a question about where you pair the device from and how that impacts zwave routing long term. I see it often recommended to pair the device near the hub (and in my case, all the devices will need firmware updates, so I'll probably want it near the hub anyway) and then move it to where you need it because Zwave will just automatically figure out the best routing given some time.

But then I see other threads where people talk about the crazy routes some of their traffic takes (I have some of these too!) and people comment that zwave is really stubborn and that if a route works it won't change it.

So I don't want to end up in a situation where all these devices start off with a direct connection, get moved further away (they will all be at the edge of the network) and then try their hardest to maintain the direct connection even when another route works better now.

@bcopeland, I know you're considered by many to be the zwave guru. Would be really cool if you could chime in with your knowledge. I also know you're probably super busy and understand if you can't.

I'd always pair in place. Otherwise as you've noted when you relocate to the edge of the network it will not be aware of its neighbours and route back when a direct link is not possible.

Edit: and if you do have issues pairing in place, then the direct link established by pairing next to the hub will be of little use.

Best Practices vs what to do when best isn't good enough.

Best practice is to pair/join In Place. Put the device where it will spend its life and pair (a Zigbee term) or Join (a ZWave term) .

I've been suggesting for a long time to aways start a ZWave device with an Exclude. If the device Excludes from its permanent home, most likely it will Include. Plus, you can't create a Ghost with an Exclude.
