My environment is all Zigbee - but it may be my topic also applies to Wifi and Zwave devices as well.
When I implement a driver, I like to have the ‘Firmware Update’ available. I realize it doesn’t work often but it would be nice if all devices at least returned ‘nothing available’ in the logs.
More importantly, since it is a Command, it doesn’t show in my device driver list under Capability, because it isn’t. But. It would be great to have a column that DID show a firmware command was available for a device or at least by driver. Currently I just have to go to every device and see, then push the button, and hope.
I’ve been rotating devices to HA as the Firmware update works very well for me there, but thats also a royal pain. I’m not trying to update every day or week. I’ve gone a year without touching firmwares in my network, but generally it’s more like every 6 months.. But there has been some serious fixes coming out as AI gets applied to firmware and drivers, and it was time for me to run through my network.
But I would love to see HE provide a better way for me to view my network in totality - I think thats one of the jobs a hub’s should do.
And just for discussion, if FirmwareUpdate was a capability, not just a command, it would get picked up and be readily shown under Capabilities, thereby solving this issue for me.
I wonder when I see these post why everyone updates device firmware.... I have never updated firmware on any of my devices over years, because I have never had a need to. I don't just update things for the hell of it, I have to have a reason, like a buggy device or a new feature in the firmware, that a newer firmware fixes or gives me something new.
So I just can't relate to the need for this request, personally. With all my devices, trying to figure out what a firmware update will do for me for any particular device is not something I want to even spend time on.
Same with Hub platform updates, I will skip several at a time, based on reading the release notes, if it does nothing for me that I need or if the update just fixes something that doesn't apply to me.
Edit: I still don't get this voting button, I thought it would give an option to upvote or downvote, but I guess it is not a choice vote, and it is just a thumb's up vote, that cannot be reversed...
All you do is tap/click on the Vote button. It tells you how many votes you have used.
Evidently, Hubitat staff will work on the features with the most votes.
You can remove you vote.
I believe that was the intention. There’s no yes/no vote, simply the option to vote for the requested feature if you agree with the OP it’s worth implementing.
