I set up a notifications app to send text to my phone app every minute when the Garage Door is open, as "seen" by the Switch/light which shows the door is open. The phone texts once, sometimes twice, but then stops. Can I please have suggestions on how to get this to work?
I expect the notification app is looking for an event, where the switch goes from being off to being switched on. So if the switch turns on and remains on, the notification app would not trigger another notification.
The time you entered (1 minute) is not how often to repeat the notification, it is there to stop repeated triggering and sending of notifications throughout that period of time. This can be useful when doing notifications based on things like temperature or battery readings, wanting to be notified when they drop below a certain amount. Each change in a reading that is still below the threshold would trigger the notification, so this helps keep the noise down.
In terms of how best to set this up, I would need to spend some time looking at it. Hopefully others can chip in.
Having trouble reading the mobile device screen shot but here's what it looks like on a regular browser using a lock, if I understand your use case correctly.
You want to set repeat notifications on, and then tell it how often you want to repeat. There are a couple of options for stopping repeat - next event will basically make it repeat until it receives another event (usually closed in your case).
This will start notifying after the door has been unlocked for 15 minutes, and will then repeat the notice every 15 minutes thereafter until the door is locked.
Hello:
As @sburke781 mentioned, the notification app is not flexible enough to do what you want it to do.
It is my hope, that in the future the Notifications app will be made much more flexible and robust.
In the meantime, I suggest that you use RM to do the notifications for you.
I suggest that as a trigger you put in the event that you want to use as the start, and then do a notification, then wait N minutes, check that the triggered condition is still open, and then Notification. This will all be in a loop terminating when the triggered event is not true anymore.
I hope that's not too confusing.
(I just saw @brad5 approach, and its much easier! Well done @brad5)
All ... thanks ... the discussion appears to be going in the direction I thought. Use RM!
Using the garage door switch transition limits me to one notification ... I want one notification every 15-minutes. The Garage Door Open Lamp (set up by RM) stays on continuously while the door is open ... but I still get only one notification - presumably when it transitions on.
With either the contact or the switch I don't get the option to "Repeat Notifications" ... which appears to be what I need. I wonder if I can set up a virtual lock? But RM seems like the best option.
Sorry I didn't notice the computer display screenshot was "compressed. Reposted here for clarity.
@Aussie Sorry if I am distracted by your handle, but...??
(hadn't noticed it before....)
Not expecting some elaborate response that lays out your name, DOB or place of birth, but are you from similar heritage, or just some happy accident that landed you with a handle often attributed to people down my way...?
I was born and raised in Adelaide SA. Due to a series of fortunate events (too long to discuss here), I was recruited out of Aus to the UK first, and then to the USA ... where I live today. Where are you based? Is a lot of the Hubitat crew Aussie?
It is often difficult to get the Aussie handle ... so I was lucky!
