Just wanted to drop in and say hello. 
My HE is on the way along with some zwave switches, zigbee plugs and a zigbee motion sensor. This will hopefully better my disjointed automated network of Alexa/Hue/Bond. Looking forward to jumping on the HE learning curve and eventually adding more devices and automation.

enjoy it. everything you mentioned can be integrated into HE (either natively or through community apps), so you'll be able to use HE to manage everything

Not nearly enough. Buy them by the dozens, you'll find lots of places to automate. My wife doesn't even know where the light switches are anymore. We walk into a room that is in someone else home and wonder why the lights don't come on!

So true! Motion sensors are very, very useful. Have at least one in every room.
That said, you have the right approach - start small, get use to how things work and then grow when you find more that you wan to do.
In our house, we only rarely use switches anymore, except to run specific commands, like turning off all lights and on the alarm when going to bed, etc.
And welcome to the community! In my experience here, there will alway be someone around to help when you need it.
