I've created a test app in both Basic Rules and Rule Machine 5.1 to send an email notification when a button is pushed. In Basic Rules (1st pic below), everything works fine. When I try to do the same thing in Rule Machine 5.1, there is no "Send Notification" selection in the actions box (pic #2). What am I doing wrong?
Handy tip: the Rule 5.1 docs (and prior versions too) contain a list of actions by type at the end. This can be helpful when you're trying find something without needing to dig through the menus each time, though you do get used to that, too.
Thanks for pointing that out. I do like Hubitat, but I think this is a perfect example why most product reviews state a "steep learning curve".
Here we have the exact same action that in one instance is called Send Notification and in another its called Send, Speak or Log a Message, Send HHTP Request -> Send/Speak a Message. It wouldn't hurt to name these things the same or have less drill down in drop down boxes to make it easier for the user.
In defence I'd say the name difference was because they had more things to group under that option group, so really needed to change the wording to reflect that. E.G "send notification" doesn't express that it includes logging.
I have been caught out by subtle differences not in wording but in behaviour between Basic Rules and RM. So I have come to the conclusion that in future I will only use RM even though Basic Rules is very nice! The thing is I have to use RM for some things and I don't want to keep swapping out my brain processes to handle them both to the best of their capabilities.
Having thought about it, I think maybe Basic Rules is to suit one type of user, while Rule Machine will suit a different type. Maybe it isn't ideal for most users to use them both together. I'd be interested to know whether Bruce has a view on a "target user" for each type or if he thought we'd probably all use a bit of both.
I'd say because the Rule Machine action can either send a notification or speak (or both), so "Send notification" is not a sufficient description. In Basic Rule, these are two entirey separate actions.
Of course, that is probaby part of your question, too. And that I don't know, aside from the fact that Rule Machine is much more powerful so has more possible actions, needs more places to fit them, and therefore just has things categorized a bit differently, I suppose.
