[NO LONGER NEEDED] C8 -> C8 Pro migration (that's fine), But now the C8 won't turn back on

I have a C8 hub that I just upgraded to a C8-Pro (pretty painlessly actually), and I went to go back to the old one to do a wipe and reset so I could either re-use it or sell it, but now the thing doesn't power back on.

The blue light never comes on, the page never comes up, and my router doesn't acknowledge it on the network. It just seems... dead. I had recently upgraded it to 2.4.3.171 just before the migration, and I've already moved all subscription stuff to the new one. It wasn't showing any signs of something off or weird before the move (aside from the occasional ZWave radio lock-up requiring a shutdown and power cycle).

So what do I do at this point? I can't even remember when I got it, I can't find my receipts.

That's not good.... Try another power supply and/or USB cable.

Tried multiple, different power supplies (I have like 20 little USB wall-worts from cell phones long since recycled, power banks, and dedicated PD supplies), several different cables (C-to-C, C-to-A), it just doesn't want to power on. :slightly_frowning_face:

Bummer...really odd (lucky in a way) coincidence that it goes south just after you migrated from it.

You could enter a warranty claim on the Hubitat site. If you had Hub Protect on the C8 up until the migration HE staff might determine you're covered and replace your C8. Not sure how that works in this type of situation...

I would be tempted to open up the hub and use a magnifying glass to see if the power connector is somehow cracked or has a bad solder joint. If so, it might be repairable.

I think all C8 had a physical reinforcement of the connector (glue or epoxy?), but I suppose there is still the possibility of damage somehow.

I opened a warranty claim, but if that falls through then that will be my next port of call. I mean I love these things, and it would suck to not be able to have either a backup, a remote hub, or a development hub (there's a ton of stuff for ESPHome and I think there's a bridge that someone wrote that I want to investigate without completely borking my main hub). Even just to have something to give to a friend and say "Hey, I think this might solve your problem, and I'll even throw it in for free."

Well, I thought I opened the claim but I never got a confirmation email.

Aside from that... I don't know what I changed or what I did, but... IT'S ALIVE!!!

I wasn't able to do a Full Reset on it because it has a subscription attached to it (I'd have to de-register it), but I was able to reset the radio's individually and then do a soft reset to clear the apps, automations, devices, etc., and get it as close to factory as I can without removing it from my account. So now I have a "development hub."

Gotta love it when the universe gives you a good mysterious event.

Don't forget to make sure the two hubs are on different Zigbee channels...25 or 15 are generally recommended for the C8 hubs, as HE staff have seen some patterns of Zigbee issues w/C8 hubs using channel 20. This is a YMMV issue...some users are fine on channel 20, so if things are working w/out issue on 20, no reason to change.

Looks like the C8-Pro defaulted to Ch 14 and 16 power, and I just set the C8 to 25 and it's at 8 power, I might even set it lower if I'm only doing "bench testing" of any new devices on that hub. So I should be good

16 spooks me -- assuming you have a good spread of repeaters, that'd be the first thing I'd dial down if you're seeing any zigbee weirdness... I've found that my hub is happiest down on 4, so I'm definitely a lower-power fan

But other users around here have been happy on 16, so hopefully it works for you too!

Most find 8 is a good landing spot for Zigbee power....higher powers come with higher interference, and the hub talking to remote sensors that can't talk back that far themselves. Def a YMMV so keep an eye on Zigbee things.

If it was me I'd move my primary C8 hub to 25, and my bench test unit to 15. Give the primary hub the "clearest space" in terms of competing with local 2.4GHz wi-fi signals. :man_shrugging:

i put my backup c8 in a faraday box and in addition wrap extra faraday fabric around it and have a little hole in it for the net connection. also remove antannaes when i configure my backup hub.

this is because i am restoring a backup on it so i have a box a neighbor could swap in while i am gone if need be. So in this case it will temporarily come back up on same channels as live when i do the restore. even in this case i occasionaly have a zigbee device or two that drops off and needs to be rebooted after the procedure.
