No IP address

Hi all,
I have opened a support case but I thought I'd post here too. My Hubitat no longer has an IP address. I can see that there is a physical link to my switch (UBNT), as the 100Mb LED is lit. But the device does not request an IP address from my DHCP server (pfSense). Here is what I have tried so far:

  • Scanned all IP addresses in my /24 - it is not there
  • Used Advanced Discovery on find DOT hubitat DOT com - find by MAC address DOES work but the IP address it returns is not correct/does not work
  • Set a DHCP reservation on my pfSense router
  • Removed the reservation
  • Changed the duplex settings on the switch port auto->FDX->back to auto
  • Tried a different cable
  • Tried a different switch port
  • Power cycled the HE
  • Captured traffic with Wireshark on the DHCP server - no activity from the MAC address of the HE
  • Port-mirrored the HE port at the switch and captured with Wireshark - again no traffic from the HE

It seems like the Hubitat is still working because the clock-based automations I set up are still happening (e.g. turn on garage light at 5PM). Also the green LED is lit after it boots up. But I cannot access the HE over the network.

I have not yet tried a factory reset. If I do that will I have to re-pair all my devices? I do have a recent backup.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Take a look at this... wondering if the little bitty button on the bottom might be an option? I have not had this happen to me so I can only surmise but...

It's a screen shot from:

That'd be the factory reset I think. I may go there next, but I wonder if I'd have to re-pair all my devices.

I dont think that's the factory reset button... but let's confirm! @thebearmay do you know?

The little button is not a factory reset.. it's more of a "network reset" if it has to have a name...

It's a DHCP reset; off the top of my head it will revert the hub back to utilizing DHCP for IP assignment (sometimes useful if the setting gets corrupted or the static IP becomes unreachable). I can't recall if it forces a reboot of the hub, but it may. Sometimes I've seen a reboot of the router resend a DHCP record to the hub when it comes back up - so something else to try.

Excellent, I will try that next! Thanks everyone.

Let us know...

What address are you getting?

Well actually it gives the old address that it used to be, when it worked - 192.168.1.184, for what it's worth. Even if I clear my ARP cache. But no response at that IP, it does not 'exist'.

Gonna try pressing the itty bitty button tonight!

Even if the itty bitty button brings it back we still won't know why it went south... and it may happen again. Given your description of the problem and the steps you've already taken, I'm gonna assume you have more than a passing familiarity with networking. I know you tried different switch ports. Is there anything that could have changed on the network side? Like a firmware auto-update or a configuration change? Any other events you can correlate the outage to? And I assume it has been running for some time perfectly happy...

Any recent thunder/lightning storms? I have had nearby lightning strikes take out just Ethernet ports on various devices in the past.

That's a good point @brad5, and yes it had been running fine for at least a year. I cannot think of any recent changes that would be relevant, but TBH it's been months since I last logged in to it.

No recent lightning here @ogiewon. Yeah I have seen lots of lightning damaged network devices at work, even with no direct hit!

Have you tried a different port on your switch?
Have you tried a different switch?
Have you tried a different cable?

Have you tried using http://hubitat.local to see if that would provide you access?

Hi All!
So pressing that network reset button for 7+ seconds did in fact solve my issue! The Hubitat rebooted and immediately grabbed an IP address. I am back on line. Thanks very much @brad5 and everyone else who gave suggestions.

Cheers!

Instead of setting the ip on the hub, set a reservation in your dhcp for it

Yes that's what I have done. Thanks!
