Hi everyone, I'm looking for a little help adding a virtual button to my Hubitat C7 firmware version: 2.4.4.132.
The problem is this: I haven't been able to create a virtual button on Hubitat to use on my Google Home Mini.
I'll start by saying that I tried everything before writing this post.
Currently, my Hubitat is connected to a Lutron QS system via Telnet, and everything works perfectly. The keypad on the Hubitat dashboard controls my Lutron lights. Basically, everything's fine.
But when I connect my Hubitat accounts to Google, it blocks out any device I add to my Hubitat, and it doesn't find it among Google devices. (I've tried SeeTouch, Pico, Dimmer, Virtual Button, etc.).
I also tried Alexa in the same way, but no devices were found.
Is there a short step-by-step tutorial for creating a virtual button in Hubitat so it can then be found on Google Home?
From there, I could figure it out on my own.
I also tried adding the "Google Home Hubitat Community" app, but I discovered that Google has blocked this process.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with a quick step-by-step guide.
The Google Home integration does not support button devices, only the specific documented types. See:
A common workaround is to create a virtual switch instead of a virtual button (assuming you're using a virtual device) -- you can set it to turn off instantly or with a short delay so it's effectively momentary like a button -- or if you absolutely need button capabilities on the device for some reason, you could use some custom driver that combines the two capabilities and, for example, turns on the switch momentarily with a button push. You could use any device supported by Google and capable of triggering your automation, assuming that is your goal (you didn't say; I think Google supports switches for this, but Alexa didn't for a long time, and people had to use things like motion or contact sensors -- but ultimately the same idea, using something both platforms support that you can make do what you need.)
The Alexa integration also currently does not support button devices.
Does your Lutron system offer a native Google Home integration? That might be an alternative if so.
Thank you for your support.
I actually already tried adding a virtual switch instead of a virtual button, and Google found it right away.
I'd read about people who'd solved it this way, but in Italian, "switch" and "button" are often seen as the same thing, so it led me astray.
In this case, I see that many devices are no longer Google-compatible.
The Alexa test was an attempt to figure out if I was doing something wrong with Google (even though I've set up my entire house on Google without any problems).
Finally, I know that Lutron Qs works natively, and I must say very well with Google, but unfortunately, it requires the BDG2 Connect Bridge, which I don't have and is also quite expensive.
Lastly, I wanted to thank you so much for your invaluable help; without this small difference, I might not have been able to resolve it.
