Correct. The option to turn on/off from the webgui of the device is gone.
That sounds like the template is not properly applied and activated. If you set the template from the tasmota web page under "Configuration -> Other" and select activate it should work.
I tried that template on one of my devices, when active it gives a switch with a toggle.
I no longer have the option to activate or not from the webgui. Should I do another reset 5 and use the {"NAME":"Generic","GPIO":[255,255,255,255,255,255,255,255,255,255,255,255,255],"FLAG":15,"BASE":18} template?
I got it. I took the template for the AWP03 {"NAME":"AWP03L","GPIO":[0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,21,17,56,57,0],"FLAG":0,"BASE":18} and put it on the device. I put it in preferences in HE as well. The child device is now created and in debugging logs it shows

I can toggle the switch from the device gui and the child device.

That is by design. To "uncheck" that, go and select a module in "Configure Module". That will deselect the template. The template set there is not the right one, try pasting in yours.
Great, then it works, still something not working properly with setting templates from the driver. Will have to try to reproduce that.
I'm about to flash the second one. I'll let you know how it goes.

Second one done. All I did this time was put the template in after upgrading to 8.3.1 and then did a manual add from the app. Found it immediately and created the child immediately. It's already working! AND I'M OFF THE CLOUD! Only 6 more to go. Thank you again!!!

I don't, thank you for offering. I've considered it so that I could use it to get some extra devices without spousal intervention, but not sure what to use. Paypal doesn't have Donate functionality since my account is Chinese. Maybe if I find some other solution...
