Newbie with a few questions

Hi All!

Hope you're having a great weekend. I recently purchased a Google Home and wanted to slowly build-up a smart home. I came across the Hubitat while YouTubing and had a few questions.

  • Does it work with Google Assistant or is it only compatible with Alexa?
  • The list of compatible devices shown on the website, do they work directly with the Hubitat or do I still need to purchase their individual hubs which I subsequently connect to the Hubitat?
  • What is the range of the Hubitat? Will it cover my whole house or will I need to buy extenders like for WiFi?
  • What is the maximum number of devices one can add to it?

Thanks in advance!

A.

Relative newbie here also but from my experience thus far...

  1. Yes it works with GA nicely. In fact, beyond the normal integration, there is a method to send commands silently to GA using a relay method running on a node.js server (like an rPi for example) which effectively means you can issue any command to GA and have it actioned. I'm going to try to set this up soon.
  2. Most work directly but some require a hub (like Hue and Lutron). In all cases I think this is explained in the table.
  3. Seems to have good range, but the art and science is in forming an effective network for your radio devices (z-wave &/or zigbee). There are many, many posts on this subject to help you regarding the best approach, what repeaters work well, the issues with locks, the relative merits of zigbee, the dangers of lamp bulbs as repeaters, etc. You can also use multiple hubs and connect/synchronise them (so, some people I read have a hub upstairs and one downstairs, or one out near their barn etc). Obviously you do still need network/wifi in order to connect the bridge.
  4. Not sure but some people have literally hundreds of devices on their hubs. Others have split their devices for various reasons across multiple hubs which can be connected together and coordinated using several apps. It's incredibly flexible!

Enjoy!

Thanks!

Check out docs.hubitat.com, which covers some of what you’re looking for (not necessarily all, it’s still a work in progress).

Hubitat works great with Google assistant I have a Home, multiple Minis, and a Home hub as well as an old Chromcast Audio. All of assistants work great for controlling devices on Hubitat and all of the devices work as Text to Speech devices (using the Chromcast Beta integration) for reading notifications aloud like "The mailbox was just opened" This is something that cannot currently be done with Alexa.
