Newbie help with Hubitat and Zooz or GE devices

I just received my Hubitat (switching from ST because of Zooz) and I'm trying to add my very first device. A zooz zen22 v2.0 dimmer switch in the Master bedroom.

I went to devices and pressed start zwave. And then I pushed the uP button on the paddle switch 6 times and it says it recognizes it as a generic device. I gave it a name MB Lights.

I then go back to devices and it shows there and I click on MB Lights, and under commands I click on Off and nothing happens. I click on On and nothing happens same when I click on flash.

What am I doing wrong?

Harold

If something pairs as just a generic device, there's a good chance the incorrect driver is created for it, therefore you would go into List of Supported Devices - Hubitat Documentation and find the device that you are pairing and look what the recommended driver for that device is, In this case it says Generic Zwave Smart Dimmer driver. So I would go to the device page of that switch and change the driver to this, save it and hit configure.

I would recommend first excluding the device, doing a reset and then trying to pair again. I have the zooz switch and it paired with the correct driver. If the device is listed on the supported devices page that means that the system is set up to recognize the device when it is paired. If it doesn't, that means something went wrong in the pairing process or that the firmware of your device doesn't match what the driver is set up to handle. If it doesn't pair successfully the second time, i would contact support@hubitat.com or tag mike.maxwell as he's the "driver guru" and can help you out.

However, if it paired as "device" it would not have any commands available in the edit device screen as there was no driver associated with it. so, if you can show a screenshot of the edit device screen, that would be helpful.

All of the devices listed in our list of supported devices wiki will select the correct driver (also noted in that wiki page) when the device is joined to Hubitat. The only time you need to manually change drivers is if Hubitat selects "Device" on the join page, please note, many drivers start with the word Generic.
Unless Hubitat selects Device as the driver, or you have a known specific reason to change drivers manually, it is NOT recommended to fiddle around changing them.

I didn't tag you as to not bother you on a Sunday but you found it anyway.

If you have a device that joins as device but is on the supported devices page, would excluding and re-adding be your best bet or would you set it manually then?

Yrs that and make sure I het the fingerprint for it.

Ok so I have excluded and readded 3 times now. It adds the device but only 1 out of 20 tries does it turn on or off the lights. I have rebuilt the zwave network and it still does not work consistently.

I can't even get it to add the GE fan controller at all.

Does it add as a zooz zen22 or just a basic "device"?

It adds as a generic zwave smart dimmer

If your data matches mine, you should be paired correctly, as mine works fine......If it is, your zwave network may just need to settle down after a bit.

As others have said you always have to exclude to Zooz switches. Hate to say it but sometimes even a hub reboot is needed to get them to pair. BUT once paired they respond significantly faster than my GE devices.

I just added (3) Zooz 22 and also their dimmer. The dimmer was easy but the toggles required a hub reboot.

Hub has been rebooted numerous times. still the function only works about 1 out of every 20 times I ask google or click on the on or off command on the device screen.

The GE switch will not even be seen by the Hub. I have tried excluding several times and nothing.

The GE switch worked on the old Samsung ST hub, but I cannot get the Hubitat to recognize it.

These are currently the only zwave items in the house. I just moved to my new house, and all of the other devices are in boxes waiting to be installed, but need to get a working hub in order to add the devices.

I also verified that the software was up to date on the hub.

Any additional suggestions? Could it be that the GE fan switch is zwave+ and Hubitat can't work with it? Am I out of luck with this setup and Hubitat? I don't want to go back to ST, because the version 3 no longer supports Device handlers and I would like it to function with the zooz controllers.

HE is compatible with Zw+. Zen22's are Zw+ as well.

I have Zen23 toggles (Generic Z-Wave Smart Switches) for my upstairs and they all work fine.. I have GE Zw+ switches for both bathrooms fan controls - they are the toggles so may be different from yours.

Did you run a Z-Wave repair? How did you exclude your devices before pairing them?

Yes I tried a zwave repair. I went into devices, and discover new devices, and then selected zwave, and then clicked on exclude device. I then clicked on the down paddle 3 times like it says in the manual. I then rebooted the hub, and then readded the zen22 switch. It sees it, and it registers correctly (same as shown above in the screenshots). I then test it, and as stated it works 1 out of about 20 times. I then go back into Devices, and select zwave, and click on start detection, and I click on the upper paddle of the GE switch and nothing.

I have tried to exclude it as well. It did exclude once, but It will not add it.

I don't envy your issues..

Did you factory reset the GE switch? Also how far away is the nearest zooz switch to the HE?

This is likely a time to contact support directly. support@hubitat.com

@erktrek Yep factory reset the GE. Pressed the down paddle until I get the flashes.

The hub is 5 ft across the room on the dresser and 1 ft lower than the switch. So I don't think that is it.

@zarthan I sent them an email yesterday with the same information in the first post. Hopefully I will hear from them today.

If this is the "only" zwave items, how far away is the hub from these items. zwave repairs help strengthen your mesh, but if you don't have "a mesh" with only 2 items, it doesn't do anything.

Which is closest the Zooz or GE switch? Also how far is the Zooz switch from the GE Switch?

Any baby monitors, old wireless phones, etc that are on 900MHz frequency?

I have seen (once) where a lot of 900MHz interference killed a zwave network. Just a passing thought.
