Me as well! I even remember about 25% of them
I don't have Flair vents. If I did, I would consider replacing the built-in ecobee integration with the "ecobee Suite" from @storageanarchy. One of the many helper apps in his integration will help you maintain a constant temperature.
No stupid questions, only stupid answers
One of the great (and maybe not so great) things about Hubitat is that there are so many different ways to accomplish what you want.
I am a Flair user and, while I like @aaiyar’s idea of using Ecobee Suite (because it’s prepackaged and fairly easy to use), I quickly found I couldn’t do what I wanted. And I am persnickety about doing things very specific ways.
So, generally speaking I use rule machine (RM5.1) to write my own logic, above and beyond the Dynamic Air Balancing that is built into this integration. If you’re game, I’m happy to share my rules here. LMK…
@mluck - sign me up! I'd love to see it

@mluck - just wanted to bump the request for your awesome logic / rule machine rules up! After all the work my Flair vents have all been at 100% for 24 hours - that should be illegal! No problem if you're busy of course
John
Hi Everyone
So, I'm still at the point where I have installed 13 vents, installed Hubitat Elevation, installed Jamie's program with Dynamic Air Balancing but haven't done anything else. The good news is that my vents are opening and closing with 10% increments (I believe). The bad news is I'm not sure why but I am not sure it's balancing. Here are my current temperatures and % opening. The coldest room in the house now is our master bathroom (as we are remodeling and it's down to the studs). You can see the temperature is super low (57) but the vent has been at 0% for the last few hours. Additionally, this is going from 0% to 100% where others are going up and down at 10% increments.
Also, if it's easy for anyone to answer via email/text or even Zoom - please let me know
Sorry for the slow response. Work has been a bit crazy lately.
Here's my rundown on logic:
- I use the in-built Dynamic Air Balancing to open/close the vents based on temperature differences between the respective in-room temperature and the zone's thermostat. This I accomplish just through the HE app settings, as follows:
Flair App Settings
Flair app parameters (note I have cut off all the repetitive vents fields at the bottom):
- Then I have a series of RM5.1 rules (one rule for each room) that sets the room as active or inactive based on whether it's occupied and also whether the door to the room is open/closed. As you probably know, if a Flair room is flagged as inactive, then the dynamic air balancing is essentially overridden and the vent can remain closed. This is important for us because we are empty nesters so we have a bunch of rooms that are basically never used any more -- for these rooms, when we close the door for a prolonged period with no occupancy, it's our way of mothballing the room. No need to heat the space to the same degree. These rules accomplish this. (By the way, you'll see in this rule reference to humidity also -- this is because if the house gets overly humid, we don't want the vents closed even if there's no one in the room. See the next rule!)
- As referenced above, if a room is overly humid (either in relative to the rest of the house or as an absolute measure), we don't want the vents closed down, no matter the occupancy. This rule (we have one per room) checks humidity levels a few times a day and opens the vent if warranted.
- For the most part, our HVAC fans are set to run only when the HVAC is actively heating or cooling the house. However, there are very limited and specific circumstances where we run the Fan only to provide basic circulation in the home (how and when is probably the subject of a whole other thread!). When this circulation thing is happening, we want the vents to be open, not fully but moderately. This rule (also one per room) makes sure that happens.
Hope this helps you and others. And hope folks will share their logic as well. Best part of this community is what we learn from each other!!!
EDIT: one other I forgot because it's just a resilience item, not functional:
- Make sure all the vents have a strong wireless signal so they don't miss messages (you can see I have a couple on the edge of what's acceptable):
Hmm, it's difficult to be helpful with just this information. Some things that might help troubleshoot:
Are you, generally speaking, in a heating time of year for where you live? I'm guessing you are since "UW/Madison."
Are all these rooms set to active? (check the HE vent devices to see what their room active attribute is set to)
Are all these vents in the same physical zone as the area controlled by the thermostat in your dashboard?
Are you using the dashboard to manually control the vents open/close or are you letting the DAB do it's job?
Maybe post the efficiency stats in the HE app page. That gives you a sense of how much balancing is going on.
Lastly, take an extreme example (like the Master Bathroom that appears way underheated) and post the events over time for %-open value. Try to get a sense where the Flair app is attempting to reroute more heat to that vent.
Also, note that, depending on the value you use for manual/conventional vents, the app might not actually close other vents (in order to redirect warm air to places like your MBA) to prevent overly restricting air flow and damaging your HVAC.
Sorry, I realize most of the above is unlikely to be helpful on their own, but at least it gives us places to start looking?
@ljbotero Jaime, I'm realizing this multi-zone problem (i.e., vents that are in multiple zones, each with their own thermostat) is a deeper problem than just creating multiple Flair "homes" (sic).
Because, if I separate my vents into homes (for example, vents 1-10 in the "Upstairs" home and vents 11-20 in the "Downstairs" home), then each Flair home has to have its own Flair hub (bridge and/or puck). Ick. Of course, there's no virtualization of homes and hubs.
So while it's still possible to do, it'll get silly expensive. So, with my hat in hand, I'm wondering if you'd be willing to attempt a solve at the HE app layer? Since I'm not a dev, all I can offer is to be your tester. Ugh, no great, I know.
If you're not willing, I would totally understand. I'm sure you have a life and a job, so no judgement either way.
Edit: Jaime, one other minor thing: the app is not configured currently to allow for multiple instances of the app. I’m pretty sure it’s a small change, but I don’t know what it is. Regardless of the above, can you pls make the tweak to allow multiple app instances?
