New C8, led light stays off, doesn't connect to network

I have a new C8, plugged in the ethernet, then plugged in the USB power, but I get no led light coming on. It doesn't turn blue or green, it just stays off.

Oddly the ethernet port on my router does become active when the C8 is plugged in, but I don't see any DHCP entry in my router.

I did try and use the MAC address to allocate an IP address, but it made no difference.

I also tried without ethernet, but same result, the led light stays off.

Any ideas what to try next?
