New c-8 blinks green and red

I'm just starting to set up my new C-8 hub, but the LED never turns completely green, and slowly flashes between green and red. MyNewHubitat shows up in my wifi list, but when I connect to it, no portal opens. When I try to connect to 172.16.1.1 in a browser, it says that I'm not connected to the internet. I've tried repeating the whole process. What needs to be done? Thanks!

Sorry to hear your initial experience isn’t going well so far.

WiFi should work out of the box, but sometimes can be difficult to work with.

Is it possible for you to plug the hub into your router with an Ethernet cable just to get it registered?

You may have more success getting WiFi setup after the hub is on your LAN via Ethernet.

What is subnet of your home network?

From the information given, it looks like 172.16.11.0 /24, Usually (but not mandatory) the address 172.16.11.1 would be the address of the router.

Why do you think that address is assigned to the hub?

What device are you using to connect to the hub? Phone, PC, etc.

What is the address of that device.

While connecting to the WiFi access point the hub itself creates during initial setup, that shouldn’t matter.

OP didn’t clarify, but that’s more likely the subnet their phone (or whatever WiFi client device they’re using) says the hub’s access point created?

I’ve never tried to setup a hub using WiFi, so I don’t know whether the captive portal always works as intended or not.

Continuing to troubleshot the initial setup over WiFi is, IMHO, a bit of a waste of time unless it’s actually not possible to connect the hub with an Ethernet cable even temporarily.

ETA: once it’s connected by Ethernet and the network reset button on the bottom of the hub is pushed, one only needs to browse to http://findmyhub.hubitat.com/ from any web browser and it should show up there.

I'm just walking through the online directions for start up, and it says:

"A connection portal will open (this can take up to a minute). If not, open http:// 172.16.1.1/"

Right, so that’s the hub’s default subnet when it’s in WiFi access point mode.

You could try hitting the network reset button underneath the hub and seeing if the portal will come up when it reboots.

Or consider connecting via Ethernet for setup :slightly_smiling_face:.

I understand now, thank for pointing that out. I originally set my hub up using Ethernet so I wasn't aware of the Hubitat's captive portal.

Yup, I’m not that familiar with it either, TBH.

Presumably it should “just work.”

But WiFi can be a real pain sometimes.

If one can configure the hub just once by Ethernet, WiFi configuration can then be passed to the hub through the settings page and it’ll probably be more likely to connect after rebooting.

I had to look several times, but finally found that very subtle button on the bottom. Wow that's discrete! :slightly_smiling_face: I'll try that in a little bit and report back. Thanks for the quick responses - both of you!

Lol sorry I forgot to mention it’s a bit hidden.

Resetting it with the "discrete button" worked, although the LED continued to flash between green and red, which is not what the instructions indicate - so that's a bit disconcerting and probably needs to be updated by the Hubitat folks on the web site.

Thanks for the help!!
