I had a C-8 and decided to try the C-8 Pro. Ordered directly from Hubitat thinking they will ship using Canada Post (I live in Canada). No, they use DHL and I had to pay $119.46 for Customs Clearance Service. I should have buy from Aartech. This C-8 Pro will cost a lot for me.
Yes aartech or Amazon.ca.
Years ago when I purchased my C5s and C7s I did order direct and I never paid more than $45. Very sorry you got dinged so much.
Thank you for your feedback and sorry for the confusion. When you first purchased the C-8 back in 2023, the shipping via USPS service cost you $30 CAD. Using DHL is a much faster and more reliable service for international shipping, for an extra $5 CAD. You have actually paid $35 CAD for the shipping; the difference is the tariffs and customs fees that DHL or Hubitat have little to no control over the amount imposed
Yup, he actually paid $35 CAD, unfortunately, there is no way around the recently imposed tariffs.
What are the tariffs currently applied ? I thought goods covered under the USMCA were still exempt, but I could be wrong, the story changes constantly.
Note that Canada Post, which the OP referred to (incoming from USPS) charges a flat $10 for customs processing, while the private carriers usually charge much more, even for duty free goods.
As far as I know, the tariffs imposed by Canada on certain goods from the U.S. is 25%. How does that get to be $119.46? Sounds like the Customs Clearance Service is the issue.
The crazy part is we don’t even know what products the counter tariffs have been applied to.
And assuming the hubs are actually made in Asia somewhere, tariffs should not even be applied. Sounds like you guys need to start shipping to customers from a distribution hub outside the US. Well until your guy settles down anyway.
Could you please share the receipt/invoice with detail charges? All we know from our end is that we charged $22.5 USD for shipping.
Well I guess I stand corrected.
Correct, but according to Canadian customs it’s on the importer to demonstrate the origin of the goods.
It would be helpful if Hubitat could state on the customs bill that the goods originate from China. Neither the box nor the hub has “made in China” written on it.
Aartech is great but they don’t necessarily follow sales.
Well, you can’t avoid GST/PST. You can only get lucky.
The SIMA charge is the tariffs. Make a claim to DHL that as your proxy importer they should have indicated they don’t apply.
Thank you for that info. I just did it and will see if DHL agrees with that.
What CBSA says:
Goods purchased in the US but which originate in another country are not subject to these tariffs (for example, clothing marked as made in Italy is exempt). Tariffs will apply if there is no evidence that the goods are the product of a country other than the US.
So you’ll need that evidence, presumably from Hubitat.
Under US law, the hubs originate in the US, not China. What we import from China is not a hub. It is modified to become a hub in the US, and that modification makes it a US origin product when exported by Hubitat to Canada (or anywhere else).
FWIW, Hubitat itself has been hit with very high tariffs. The tariff scheme in US is madness of the first order.
Thank you for clarifying. Very sorry to hear that.
Could I say that I'm 100% agree with you ? Sorry I can't vote.....
If you want to avoid having to pay the $18.90 DHL fee, you can contact DHL Customer support once you have your tracking number and tell them you want to do your own clearing, then go to your nearest customs (CBSA) office to do so:
DHL will e-mail you the documents that you will need.
My son does this all the time and he mentions that you need to be sure that they enter the tracking number on the form’s « Reference No. » box on the top center, or elsewhere on the form (but they need to included their stamp and officer number if added elsewhere on the form, it seems…)
Won’t remove the Surtax, but at least it will be a bit cheaper…
That said, unless timing is critical, USPS/Canada Post is always a prefered shipping option when shipping from US to Canada (Even if they might be a bit more expensive at times, and are always slower to ship).
Thank you Sebastien, next time (if there is a next time), I'll do it.
