I think I’ve ran upon a mental block of what can I automate now…
As the weather warms up and we install the window units I’m going to connect them to switches and control them through the room thermostats. That’s on the list.
I don’t have blinds
I don’t have a front door
I don’t have doors where an electronic lock/deadbolt would even make sense
I already have an alert on my gun cabinets and my waist
I've thought about installing blinds... wife likes curtains... I tried to automate curtains... ZERO WAF....
What don't I have automated? That's what I'm trying to figure out.
Switches - all z-wave or caseta (minus 1 my daughters switch controlling outlets)
Lamps are Hue
Plugs
Garage door
GeoFencing
Motion sensing in certain rooms (bathroom, kitchen)
Lux sensing for lamps
Humidity sensing for bathroom and living room (bathroom fan and living room humidifier)
Home/Away temperature controls
Garage lights on when doors open then setup on timers
Deck lights on when doors open
Cameras record/notify and turn on lights
TTS messages across Google Mini's on different events
Echo's for voice control
Fibaro big red button - plays mp3 clips to google mini's
Fibaro keyfob to play mp3 clips to google mini's
I'm running out of things to do.
I was playing with proximity detection with iBeacons and Raspberry Pi's and that was working well for the most part, but the logic wasn't quite right yet for multi-user scenario's (doing this with Home Assistant).
I need to find something else to integrate into my system. Hubitat is only a small part of my over all setup.
Smart locks, smart curtains, smart kettle, smart thermostat, automatic doors that open and closes like in shops, if you have a cat automatic cat litterbox, automatic feeder for your pets. I’ll have to think of some other things
I've seen the litterbox that works on a schedule, not really integrated into anything not even wifi. Kinda automatic, but not really. Not even a notification when it needs maintenance
Same goes with the pet feeders. I've seen some newer ones that have phone apps. That's not an integrated solution. I don't want 500 apps on my phone that I have silly wifi devices all reporting to. Are there any integrated pet feeders? Wifi is fine if it can report via MQTT or has an API that can be accessed.
I’ll most likely use Z-wave relays or wall switches. The RF is just another item to tinker with.
Zigbee is nice but not widely supported equally across all controllers. I’m not locking myself into a controller because of Zigbee.
SmartThings has good Zigbee because of cloud based DH’s. Hubitat has Ok zigbee but the USB stick they use/depend on is discontinued and there are no other integrated alternatives (as of yet). Is Hubitat going to then shift and start used deCONZ for Zigbee integration? Or another Zigbee Hub solution?
I’ve also been toying with the idea of introducing Insteon into my mix. If I had known then what I know now when I first started replacing switches I probably would have gone Insteon instead of Z-wave for my switches. Of course I say that now, and if I had I’d probably be saying the reverse lol…
I have yet to find a multi-purpose Hub that supports Z-wave AND Zigbee equally. I believe the problem lies into the focus of the Hub and target audience.
This is why I run several “Hubs” that focus on what they are “good” at.
Time to start getting wet. Water valves, sensors and sprinkler? Smoke Detector?
I have blinds and they are probably the most WAF I get from HA. I have the Graber virtual cord blinds. Close/"open base on Lux, presence and temp.
Water valve I'm thinking of. I have well water so there's more to just turning off the valve I have to cut power to the pump to keep from burning it up. On the list
Smoke Detectors are in progress 2 of the 6 are done
Hmm Graber virtual cord blinds? I'll look that up. I want blinds, wife likes curtains... maybe... hmm
The whole blinds thing gave me the idea of a motorized awning for the deck. Wife and I have talked about how nice that would be. I’ll have to look into that, probably costs a lot
Another idea and this will take time so that’s good. Building out the Home Theatre with a real PC to run/automate AV activities… something better than just a Fire TV and Harmony Hub.
I used to use a full pc for my home theatre but I got sooo tired of updates in the middle of shows (windows is a terrible interface for a home theatre player) so I switched to a ShieldTV. That thing is amazing. 4k streaming, android apps (some sideloading, but that’s no big deal) and a very solid and intuitive remote. I basically shelved my harmony after I got the shieldTV
